1YO & strep A

Hi all

Took DS to see the gp today as he's had a sore throat for 1 week and a fever for 3 days.
GP said it was tonsillitis and a mild ear infection so he's on antibiotics for 5 days. Great

However this evening I have noticed that his tongue is red( only the first half) & he has red cheeks 😭 could it be strep A? Considering the tonsillitis as well?

I'm so worried that
A) have left it too late to see the gp and his diagnosis was late and maybe caused more damage
B) what if it's strep A ? Should I phone the gp in the morning?

Which antibiotics is he on? A lot of GPS are giving ones that cover strep A too, as there's so much of it around

Yes the one he's on actually covers for it too. Strep A is under "what it is used for"

But he's on a 5 day course. From my research it should be 10 days of antibiotics for strep a 🫣

So if he's still unwell nearing the end of his course, go back and they'll probably extend?

Latest guidelines are 5 days for tonsillitis and 10 days only if it progresses into scarlet fever so sounds like you’re covered

Bacterial Tonsillitis is usually caused by strep A so the antibiotics we use cover this bacterium.

A lot of parents I have spoken to think strep A is some different disease thanks to media hype I think. Explaining that strep A causes tonsillitis/ scarlet fever/ scarletina and the more serious but rare invasive strep a helps put it into perspective. Hope your little one gets well soon.
