What's a normal amount of viral infections for a one year old to have?

First child, so trying to gauge if this is normal or not.

DD (14 months) has a high temperature and is vomiting for the fifth time in four months. Each time the GPs have said it's not a stomach bug, as she doesn't have diarrhoea, and it isn't a food allergy causing the vomiting as she wouldn't have a fever, and so have said it's likely be be a viral infection of some kind. They've only found other symptoms of an infection (a red inflamed throat last time) once out of the previous times though.

Is five times in four months pretty standard stuff?

I’d say normal and will be like that for a while I’m afraid ☹️My 6 year old is still like this, her brother had far less. Think it’s just some kids pick up more and fever higher / vomit more. I feel your pain and sending hugs 💐

Thanks @wobblymum1 It's rotten, isn't it? It's hard to imagine years more at this frequency. And it's frustrating when there's no definite cause.

Very rotten. Exhausting. Winter definitely worse.

12 a year, so one a month on average. This is what the consultant at the hospital told me when my son was being seen regularly. The baseline they work off is that each illness should last less than a week on average.

Brontosaurus · 24/01/2023 17:13

Eugh. Ok. Trying to mentally prepare myself for this being on repeat every four weeks or so then.

She's just so miserable with it.

It's a worse than usual run but totally normal range. I am a bit surprised that it sounds like you're going to the GP every time with them, we only go if the temperature doesn't go down with Calpol or it lasts longer than a few days

helloimnew123 · 24/01/2023 17:18

Are they at nursery?
My LO is always sick. Picks up everything from nursery. It's relentless

Fleur405 · 24/01/2023 17:20

If they are at nursery I’d say about 800.

Brontosaurus · 24/01/2023 17:22

@helloimnew123 No, not at nursery.

@Everydayitsgettingcloser That's been the situation each time - the meds don't work or it's goes on for days and days and she starts to get dehydrated. She won't take medicine orally any more so has paracetamol suppositories, but they don't always work to bring her temperature down.

Hmm, it is I think a bit unusual to be getting this many very severe viruses.

Mine both got plenty of viruses but the younger one (now 3) has never been to the GP with one, they are recovered after 3 days usually. It might be worth taking to the GP about potential immune system issues.

Brontosaurus · 24/01/2023 17:49

@Everydayitsgettingcloser Thanks - if she ends up back at the GP this time I'll mention it. It's tricky when you're a first timer. The first few times she was ill I didn't know whether to bother the GP with it - I figured that vomity babies not worth a trip to the doctor, but then each time medicine wasn't making her better and it was just dragging on.
They've said that it's good that I brought her in to be checked though as she was an unexplained low birth weight and is still tiny. I don't know if they're just being nice and trying to reassure me that I'm not wasting their time though!

I think given the low weight as well, it is worth delving a bit deeper.

I have 3 kids and we’ve maybe had one kid have one 24hr bug. But coughs, colds, wheezes etc constantly!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the responses.
