Son's Toenail - panicking

While bathing my son last night, 2 weeks short of his 3rd birthday, I noticed his big toenail on his foot seemed irregular and rough, so after drying him etc I used a small nail file which I've done for a long time now to try and file it down. I then realised the actual nail had split down towards the corner of the nail bed and it had just started to bleed. Not even a full drop of blood, but definitely just starting, so I stopped straight away, put sudo on and a plaster to deal with this morning.

Bit of background...when my son was around 6 months old, I was using baby nail clippers, caught his fingernail a bit too low and it started bleeding quite alot. To say I was traumatized is an understatement. I was suicidal. Alot has happened since then, but I'll never get that image out of my mind.
He absolutely hates having his nails even looked at. Screams, kicks etc etc. On bad days I have to ask my in-laws to help me.

So I just need advice if possible? I don't think I can deal with this on my own...is it a podiatrist thing? Will they see a child so young? There are loads around me, but none that actually state they specialise in children? I'm torn between ringing my GP. Because I don't know what else to do. As of last night, so signs of infection and he hasn't shown signs of discomfort. Hmmm..
As of last night. I know things could change.
Thanks

Does it actually hurt him at the moment or is it getting caught in his sock?
I would put Bepanthaseptic on it and if it gets red/ purple or signs of infection put Magnesium sulphate paste on it to treat infection. It has worked for me so many times with my kids awful toenails.
If he is a good sleeper could you get relative to trim it while he sleeps? That's the only way I could trim my child's nails at one stage because they were so adverse to it.
I truly sympathise about the nail cutting incident when your child was little. I did the same by accident with a very frail elderly relative. I felt sick with guilt and I'm not normally like that but my emotions were running very high at the time.

He literally fell asleep about 5 mins after putting him to bed, and not shown any discomfort so far.
Sleep has always been hit and miss with him. The problem is staying asleep, I'm terrified of him waking up, then not being able to get back to sleep.
I, on the other hand, have been awake since, shocking headache, and think googled every podiatrist within a 2 hour drive.
No, no signs of infection, but I obviously want to keep it that way, so thank you will look into your suggestions until I find someone who can deal with the broken nail. It's definitely still attached.
