DS 12 sudden fear of needles - help!

Just that really, haven't been able to get him to go for 2nd covid vax, tried several times but he got in to such a state he was throwing his arms about and endangering the NHS staff, crying, hyperventilating, the whole thing. He tried to be sent home from school sick today because he was meant to be getting his HPV and only 'felt better' after he was told he didn't have to do it today. (Guidance teacher is great and called me to discuss)

I've tried to talk to him about it, he completely clams up. Literally won't say anything in response. I have explained the importance of both covid and HPV.

I have explained that he will need jags of various types and to provide blood samples etc throughout his life and he simply can't avoid it.

He is autistic (high functioning) no idea if that's relevant or not. Previously spoke to the GP when it was the covid vax and she had no other suggestion than not to give him it. This is not a long term solution. I'm really struggling with what to do.

Has anyone been in a similar position and found a fix?

is it the pain of the needle?
Emla cream could help and you could try it at home first so he can see it won’t be painful.

Thank you, we have tried numbing cream and he does have a low pain threshold but he says it's the feeling of the needle going into his flesh - his words. There seems to be no carrot, stick or other means to convince him to do it. I got annoyed tonight and told him as an adult there will be lots of things he will have to do whether he likes it or not and told him he'll need to suck it up 😬
