Periods lasting months.

My dd is 15 and I just don’t know what I can do to help her anymore.

Shes had bowel issues for a few years, the paediatrician appointments have always been via phone as the first was during covid. They always put her pain and bowel movements down to ibs. He would not listen to anything else she said.
Then she started having massive bleeds. The blood would run down her legs and she would have to have me help shower and dress her. I took her to a&e the first time it happened and they asked for a urine sample, she left blood all over the seat and was struggling to walk. They didn’t even examine her and sent us to OOH who said it’s another uti and gave her a bottle of morphine. She had several uti’s. The same thing has happened 4 times over 18 months.

We saw a different paediatrician in person a few months ago and he said she doesn’t have ibs and gave 6 months worth of movicol and said that should help her. He said the uti’s were because she wasn’t able to empty her bladder properly. She still has constant diarrhoea.

We saw a private gyne in sept who put her on the pill to stop her periods as endometriosis runs in both sides of our families. She’s now been bleeding for 66 days. She’s really struggling with the clots and pains and hardly sleeping. We’ve just gone to the gp again who just gives her more pain killers but nothing else really.

The gyne has changed the pill so we are hoping this will stop her periods.

She said last week when she’s 18 she’s going to ask for everything to be removed so she won’t have constant pain and periods.
She has just finished her mocks and I don’t know how she’ll cope if she’s like this during her GCSE’s.

Has anyone had anything like this with their dd?

This sounds awful.
Not normal at all
Has she tried Tranexamic Acid to reduce bleeding?
Ibuprofen can also help cut blood loss.

RedDoughnut · 23/01/2023 12:08

Also look into Provera and Norestithone to give her a break

Sorry I can be of any help but is she being checked for anaemia etc with all the blood loss?

Uppingham · 23/01/2023 12:12

I had similar. I was severely anaemic. Once anaemia treated and put on mini pill to stop periods it all resolved. Get a blood test. Keep persisting with the GP and say cause needs to be found not just pain killers dished out. Good luck. Sounds horrendous.

Yes she has had that and it did reduce it but the clots after she stopped taking it were awful. I’m not sure if they are connected but the gp said to stop after four days.

I’ll look into the other things you mentioned.

Yes she had blood test a while ago and all normal as far as they could see. But that was before the big and long bleeding. Should I ask for them to test again?

Can you see a private Gynecologist who specializes in endometriosis? Or get an urgent referral.
Also ask for a blood test for anemia - it’s a viscous circle and makes the bleeding worse.
the poor girl. This is dreadful.

Verbena87 · 23/01/2023 13:27

Ask the gp to record in her notes that you have family history of endometriosis and that you’re requesting referral to a specialist gynae for endo. Ask them to confirm that they are not going to do this, and for them to explain their reasoning and then for them to record this in her notes as well.

RedDoughnut · 23/01/2023 13:31

Buy some ferrous sulphate tablet to top her iron up.

Make sure she is keeping a detailed diary too.

Hoe you get some answers from the medics soon

Sucessinthenewyear · 23/01/2023 13:32

The movicol is because they think she has constipation with overflow. Did she do a disimpaction?

Poor thing. Bet her schooling is getting disrupted as well.

Re the GP it may help to see a different doc within the same surgery, some are just more sympathetic and willing than others.

But yes agree for her sake I'd prob be booking a private gynae appt.

euff · 23/01/2023 14:02

Yeah I would ask for blood tests due to the length of that bleeding. I had three consecutive very heavy two week periods as a blip after twenty years of periods (normal since) and blood tests showed I was anaemic. It was impacting me and my emotions and tiredness and that's without pain etc.
