Any advice re Croup?

yaboreme · 20/01/2023 13:31

Pretty sure my son has croup, literally typed in Google at 3am 'cough that sounds like a seal bark' and it brought up croup.

He has other typical symptoms such as snotty nose/ cold.

Any remedies that can ease this? It states to not give cold and flu relief.

Thanks in advance.

Is it just the cough or is it changing his breathing? If you speak to the docs they might give you some one off steroids to help.

Dts regularly had croup, if he gets stridor which is sucking in of the tummy to breath you need a and e for dexomethosane which is a steroid. It usually gets better in the day and worse at night. Keeping the heating off helped as did bundling them into the car with the windows open for a bit.

Steam used to be recommended but not anymore.

He was coughing (barking) and whistling when he is breathing?

Maybe I will call the doctor to be on the safe side.

Grandson just had this and was breathing a little faster than usual so he was given a dose of steroids. He also had quite a high temp.

Then a few family members also came down with the same virus which ended up with several people being 'wiped out' for a couple of days. Think it's the parainfluenza virus.

Yes, do call the GP. The NICE guidelines state:
All children with croup (mild, moderate, or severe) should receive a single dose of oral dexamethasone (0.15 mg per kg body weight).

I didn't know that steam was no longer recommended but I swore by it. We used to steam up the bathroom and sleep on the floor when my youngest had it badly

Get a humidifier. The doctor told us this will help, and it did. Window open slightly at night, the cold air will help and get a humidifier on.

Thanks for your advice

A steam bath can help. I put them in the bath, then close the door, and run the shower on really hot away from the bath. Otherwise GP for steroids.

I hope your son is feeling better and apologies if you’ve already had him reviewed by the doctor. The whistling when he’s breathing is due to the inflammation causing narrowing so definitely sounds like he needs steroids to get him better.

Our daughter has had croup a fair few times. We find wrapping her up in a warm blanket and taking her outside for brief times really helps. Also a good humidifier.

Like others have said doctors can prescribe a single dose of liquid steroids which really help.

Hope your little one is feeling better.

Thanks for all of the advice, it really goes a long way.

I was lucky enough to get him to the doctor on Friday and they confirmed croup and gave the steroid dose.

Me and my husband now have a horrid virus, sore throats, aches etc!! Sad so not much fun in here!!
