My 12 year old just fainted

He had just had a bath and gone though into his bedroom, he called me and said he felt sick so I guided him into the bathroom and he passed out and hit his head on the toilet, it wasn’t a hard hit as I sort of caught him and he has no mark so I’m not worried about him having concussion but he’s never fainted before so bit worried about that. We got him a drink of water and he went and lay on his bed for about half hour and now seems as right as rain. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Ds has asd so is difficult to have a proper conversation about it with him

What temperature was his bath? I sometimes feel like this if my bath has been too hot.

I fainted when I was 12. The doctors said it was because I was growing. He might need medical attention if he hit his head. Is he showing any signs of concussion?

Lovemusic33 · 18/01/2023 20:35

I got bath can effect heart rate and blood pressure.

I ran it and tested the water so not overly hot

I also fainted when I was 12/13, apparently it happens a lot when kids reach puberty 😬

I was going to say the same....was the bath hot? Had he eaten? I think I would be tempted to say it was one of those things if he is OK now and it doesn't happen again. Although if you have a BP monitor in the house it wouldn't hurt to check his BP. If it happened again in a different situation or he doesn't feel well then of course get additional advice

No he seems fine now, after about half hour of laying on bed

My Ds who is 14 has fainted a couple of times. For him it was due to low blood pressure. He is very slim and goes dizzy if he stands up too quickly. One of the times he fainted was when he left a very hot room and then went into a cold area, so we assumed it was the change in tempreture that caused it. My Ds was also feeling back to normal after about 15 mins, we just made him take it easy for the rest of the day.

It might be worth speaking to your GP about it, but mine told me the occassional faint in a teenager is normal and usually caused by low blood pressure. I was told I only needed to seek medical attention if it became more frequent, if he didn't regain conciousness quickly, or if once he did regain conciousness he didn't feel better fairly quickly.

My dc went through a spell of fainting around that age, now just goes dizzy. Will most likely be the hot bath and getting up too quickly but have a look here:

I was and am a fainter. Getting out of a hot bath is one sure fire way to make me faint. My 12 year old DS also faints if he gets overheated. I'm sure he will be fine but obviously call 111 if you are worried. Most faints you pretty much come round as soon as you hit the floor or sometimes even before. Did you come round quick or was he unconscious for a little while?

Bath wasn’t overly hot, we have been having issues with him not eating at school but he did eat today, or at least told me he did…, my mum has a blood pressure monitor I’ll get her to bring it round in morning and check.

Getting out a hot bath into a cold bathroom can cause a faint. It causes a sudden drop in blood pressure.

came round really quick, within couple of seconds of hitting head

Age & bath, really nothing to worry about.

if you can, teach him to lay down and put his feet up when he starts to feel like that.

I used to be embarrassed to do it, but then figured fainting was actually more embarrassing!

slightly steamy hot environment & im guaranteed to faint if I don't lay down & put my feet up. I prevent it now as I'm usually alone, so safer option. But when I did faint when I came around, I'd feel like I had THE best sleep.

MILLYmo0se · 18/01/2023 20:47

As said, most likely a sudden drop in blood pressure, if he were to feel similar again have him sit down immediately (floor is best as if he did faint he cant fall off as he would on a chair). I randomly started fainting in my 40s, as best we can figure out a hormonal/histamine combination was causing low BP and sitting as soon as I felt the nausea/dizzy sorted it.

Morph22010 · 19/01/2023 07:34

Thanks for comments sounds like it’s nothing to worry about although I think I may drop doc an email to confirm as due to his asd we have issues with him not understanding how he is feeling when feeling unwell so I’ll see what they say
