Low temperature soaking in sweat

MummytoRG · 17/01/2023 22:54

Hi my LO went to the doctors today as had sky high temp 39.2 and complaining about ears hurting. Doctors confirmed had tonsillitis and one ear red and inflamed. Got antibiotics which I’ve started and now a rash has appeared lightly on his back. I’ve done the glass test and the rash disappears also when pressed it disappears. LO went to bed and then suddenly woke up crying and shivering his pjs were absolutely soaking wet his hair was soaked but the thermometer was saying lo and wouldn’t read. When I finally managed to get a reading it was 34.1. Should I be concerned his temperature has gone from over 39 to nearly 34 within a hour or so?

Yes, a sudden low temp is a sign of sepsis. He needs to go to hosp ASAP.

Sepsis can be caused by any minor infection.

I'm not a medical person but would be concerned about sepsis.

Can you call 111 and poss get to A and E under your own steam?

mulberrybag5 · 17/01/2023 23:00

Take him to a&e asap. Rash and a low temperature can both be signs of sepsis

TinaYouFatLard · 17/01/2023 23:00

I would go immediately to A&E.

Motherhubbardscupboard · 17/01/2023 23:00

Especially with the rash as well. I don't easily overreact but would treat this as an emergency. Hope all works out ok

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 17/01/2023 23:02

I too would go straight to A and E. Don't bother with 111. You need to check DC checked quickly for sepis. All the best OP.

Since I’ve changed his pjs to clean dry ones he’s stopped shivering. His temp is still low but he’s asleep but able to be woken up easily and responds. The thermometer is giving different readings for ears and head? Could this be because of the tonsillitis a drop?

shmivorytower · 17/01/2023 23:03

yes- I am usually not overly anxious, but I would go straight to A&E. Hope your little one makes a swift and full recovery

You should get him checked over.

Verite1 · 17/01/2023 23:16

Yes. I have never replied to one of these medical threads before but shivers, sweats and low temperature are all signs of sepsis. I don’t want to worry you, but sepsis can kill very fast if not caught. I would immediately go to an and e and tell them when booking in that you are worried about sepsis.

Panda8383 · 17/01/2023 23:26

Hope your little one is ok x

ladydimitrescu · 17/01/2023 23:31

You need to take him to hospital immediately- sepsis is no joke. Please get checked.

Came on to say exactly the same. Get him checked ASAP. he should be seen quickly due to the nature.

I really hope we're all wrong.

Best of luck and speedy recovery to your LO

Not quite sure what different temperatures for ears and head means? What kind of thermometer do you have?

MummyK2020 · 18/01/2023 01:08

Thanks all for replying I have brought him to A & E they have checked his obs which we’re all okay and his temperature had gone up abit when we got here which was good but took them a few attempts to get it the reading. They are keeping eye on his temperature.

@LadyGardenersQuestionTime
I have a digital one which can measure ear, head and room

Verite1 · 18/01/2023 10:26

I’m so glad you went to an and e. Hope he recovers quickly.

I would be concerned that any thermometer that claims to be able to measure all of those wouldn't be any good at any of them.

mulberrybag5 · 19/01/2023 17:15

So glad you went to a&e. How is he now?

MummyK2020 · 19/01/2023 20:23

I’m glad I took him too even though they weren’t extremely helpful and didn’t believe how he had such a low temp and were trying to say I needed to change batteries in my thermometer etc (which I told them I had done) also they even struggled spending nearly 10 mins trying to get his temp. He’s so much better now getting back to his usual self. Thanks for asking x
