Toddler face help

Toddler had fed mark on face on and off for months, then few weeks ago started getting worse, last week or so gradually getting more widespread. Doctor prescribed low steroid dose cream but improves then gets worse again.

Not sure if allergy or eczema? None of other children had this. Feel at a loss and going back to doctor next week. Doesn't bother her at all!

Forgot to say has had cold but it was like this before then.

We’ve had similar with DS (two last month) not quite as red but same places and similar sort of texture. We’re on creams at the moment. It doesn’t seem to bother him either! Interested in replies - I haven’t noticed DS’ worse after any foods in particular, have you?

birthdaybonanza · 14/01/2023 07:05

Interesting! I'm not sure if fruit is an issue. Started keeping a diary yesterday becuse I'm determined to sort it.

It's so random, I'm also not sure if the cold weather makes it worse.

Do they have a dummy?

Getinajollymood · 14/01/2023 07:08

Mines obsessed with the dummy at the moment. He does have one at bedtime but asks for it all the time. Could that be the cause?

birthdaybonanza · 14/01/2023 07:16

No dummy

My son had something similar but not quite as ‘angry’ looking. It was a few cms away from his mouth. We tried lots of things and finally went to see a private dematglogist. They wondered if it was from a dummy (it wasn’t) or if he always slept on that side and drool accumulated there. my son slept face down by that point so that got discarded too. Food was considered. I could see it sometimes got worse after tomato ketchup for example but I was sure food wasn’t bringing it on.

we tried hydrocortisone but it didn’t improve (plus it’s not great to use on the face). by chance I entered a health shop near me. The lady there recommended this cream. It worked within 24hrs. Within 48hrs his skin was back to normal after 5months of having a red area.
She also highly recommend introducing good quality probiotics.
2 years later it’s never returned

It was the cream, not the spray.. but Holland and barrer Currently seem to have a good deal where it’s both for £10.
I later looked into the cream as I’d never beard of it and read similar stories.

Thanks I will get that, do you have the name of the probiotics by any chance? I wouldn't know where to start with those.

Yes I was thinking about drool, the larger mark is the side she lies on but now there's more I'm not so sure. So glad it all worked out for your son and the cream was a success!

I was so relieved. I dreaded it being a food allergy that we would have to manage for years. What surprised me when I went to the specialist was how quick they were to move on from the ‘what’s causing it’ to ‘how can we treat it.’ I really wanted to work out the problem. But he said to me that in most cases people never do work it, it just goes under the bracket of dermatitis.

I just bought whatever children’s probiotics were on sale.. I think the Optibac ones are well regarded. Essentially now, they are tracing back so many health issues to the gut. Skin outbreaks included. Either way, probiotics won’t be a waste of money even if not helpful with the skin.

i really hope you get it sorted.

birthdaybonanza · 14/01/2023 08:03

Thanks , yes that's interesting about the specialist, I think I'm going to head out and get the cream today.

Thanks again, I feel hopeful!

Coconut oil worked for my daughter though it took some time. The cream recommended up thread looks good

Jellybum2019 · 14/01/2023 09:37

I have put a similar thread up earlier this week, ordered the cream suggested above to try! Thanks!

Ohh how long has your little one had similar? I've been out and bought the cream today and also ordered some pro biotic so fingers crossed it works for both our little ones!

I'm finding people are keen to avoid my little one as they seem to think it's catching Hmm

Jellybum2019 · 14/01/2023 17:30

on and off for the last year or so, he dribbles a lot and likes playing outside a lot at nursery so I think those are two factors, but I’m undecided whether there’s something else causing it! It doesn’t go quite as blistered as your photo looks though but otherwise they seem similar. I do worry that people worry he’s got something infectious when it’s at its worst! Bless them

EKGEMS · 14/01/2023 17:40

My nephew had this as a toddler and the only product that worked was Barbasol shaving cream in a jar

Yes it looks more blistered In the photos then real life. Oh yes I've wondered if it's the dribbling, I was quite sure it was when it was only on the one site that is slept on at night but then it's got worse on both sides so I'm not convinced now

I hope the cream works!

Impetigo

marmaladepop · 14/01/2023 21:18

I also think impetigo.

paintitallover · 14/01/2023 22:10

Could it be eggs? It dies she done kids get red mouths.

twinkletoesimnot · 14/01/2023 22:26

I also think impetigo!

birthdaybonanza · 14/01/2023 22:41

I thought Impetigo too but according to the doctor it doesn't fit the description or follow the usual pattern. Im still not convinced though. Im going to go back this on Monday as somethings not right.

Thanks all
