4mo has lump behind nipple

My 4mo DD has a hard pea sized lump behind her nipple. I haven't noticed it before today so it hasn't been there since birth.

Read lots about breast buds and hormonal lumps online but still can't help but panic!

Does anyone have any experience of this which will help to calm me down before (hopefully) getting a GP appointment tomorrow?

Don't panic! This happened to my son when he was a similar age. Obviously it's very concerning to find a lump, but as Google says, its perfectly normal. I can't remember how long it took to go but maybe a few weeks. He's 18 months now and it's completely gone. Hope that reassures you!

Aw thank you so much for replying so quickly @neverwakeasleepingbaby! It's so scary finding a lump, but it's good to know you had the same with your LO and all was ok.

Hi OP, I'm a GP.

Of course I cannot examine your baby, so please do get them checked by a GP who can check the lump.

I will however say that what you are describing sounds totally normal. Babies (particularly breastfed babies, but can happen with any baby) very commonly have breast buds that form as a result of the influence of their mother's hormones, which they have been exposed to in the womb, and in the case of breastfed babies in the milk too. This typically results in the development of breast buds, which feel like little firm lumps directly underneath the nipples. Sometimes both sides, sometimes just one. My daughter had these at a similar age.

So always get anything you are worried about checked out, but try not to lose any sleep over it while you're waiting for an appointment :)

You're welcome! Sometimes google is reassuring (1% of the time) and other times it's not (99% of the time!). But this is one of those times that it's perfectly normal. The Wikipedia article on "witches milk" is interesting and worth a read! Having babies is so weird and wonderful 😄

Thank you so much for responding @pbdr. It is so reassuring to hear this from a GP. I have an appointment to have the lump examined at 11am so hopefully my mind will be totally at ease after that.

You're right @neverwakeasleepingbaby. And when it is reassuring you kind of don't believe it because you're not used to it! Haha. I'll have a look at that article - Thank you! It is indeed ☺️

Hi - did you ever find out what this was? Found the same on my 20 month old and really worrying, have made an appointment but not for a week or so.

Just found a hard pea sized lump
Behind my 4 month olds left nipple. It’s Sunday of course so I’m sat stressing and googling until I can ring drs in morning. Did anyone ever find out what the lump was ? I never noticed it before and you think it four months old the hormones would be out of her system by now.
