Help- how can I stop my sons awful case of chicken pox scarring

indigo277 · 09/01/2023 09:25

My beautiful baby is covered in chicken pox 😫😫 they started coming out last week and have got progressively worse.
He has been taken to hospital and checked out and I just feel at a loss with what to do.
I have been creaming him lots with his usual eczema cream, the chicken pox gel and I'm going to start using sea-moss gel & vitamin e oil once they've all scabbed over.
I've also bought a solution for scars cream.
His face is just completely covered and he is so uncomfortable just clutching at straws now to try and speed up the healing process.
Any tips?

The only thing to stop them scarring is to not pick them. Easier said than done I know.
soothing them will help, oat baths (oats tied in an old tight in the bath)
poxclin also helped my daughter.

Your poor little boy ! That is horrendous. I had a lot of CP spots, not as many as him but a fair number, and I have no scars at all. My dds did not get any scars either. Unless they are repeatedly scratched, Chicken Pox blisters do often just heal with no scarring.
Keep using anything (oats in the bath etc) that will help him be less itchy, and allow the blisters to dry up, hopefully he will heal nicely and won’t be left with marks.

The poor little guy. My son was similarly covered and the only two that scarred were one on his eyebrow because I couldn't stop it being touched or scratched because he was only a baby and its location, the scab knocked out as a big lump even though I had it covered with a plaster, and it scarred. One other on his back scarred, but not as bad. That was it, all others just disappeared. I was vigilant about the ones he could reach and making sure he didn't scratch them.

indigo277 · 09/01/2023 09:52

Thank you- he isn't scratching much which is a relief but some of the scabs are still falling off leave red marks? Is that normal or is that bad because the scabs have fallen off so will now scar? X

Totally agree with oats in the bath. Get porridge oats in an old sock and tie it up, put it in the bath water. My kids loved this! They wanted to stay in all day, it was that soothing.

Sorry for your boy though, that's a really bad case :(

SirVixofVixHall · 09/01/2023 18:20

Yes when the scabs come away there can be a red mark but they do fade.

Susieblue18 · 16/01/2023 22:37

How is your son doing? Hopefully he’s over the worst of it, looks so irritating.

Cuppasoupmonster · 16/01/2023 22:39

I had a horrific case of CP when I was 14. I have the odd scar (one on the bridge of my nose and a few small white marks on my trunk) but really
nothing noticeable unless you look for them - and I picked at mine! Try not to worry just look after his skin as best you can, it can take a year or two for them to properly fade so also bear this in mind. Poor little mite

Newmum738 · 16/01/2023 22:42

Ah poor baby! Try and stop the itching now and I'd suggest bio oil once he's better. My DS had a very deep scar on his forehead and it's now gone thanks to the bio oil.

walnutmarzipan · 16/01/2023 22:46

Aw the poor soul. Bet that's insanely itchy and sore.

My son had similar and we tried really hard, but as they were scabbing over, some of them got pulled off with clothing, drying etc.

He's now 14 and still has the scars but they are skin colour and barely noticeable. A few are on his face but it makes him identifiable!

I was the same as you and so so upset at how bad they were and that they scarred. But it sounds like you are doing all the right things so fingers crossed he escapes it.

The red marks are fine and will fade. It's the ones that come away and leave a crater that are likely to scar...

Ds had chicken pox that bad when he was 3yo. He was absolutely covered and I’ve never seen anyone have it as bad as he had it until your photos. The spots were angry and red like your child’s. But they did fade in time and he has just one small scar on his face. I’d never have believed it.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 16/01/2023 22:52

Poor little scrap. I promise you they will fade. DD was 3 when she got chicken pox and she scratched and scratched. I was so worried but they almost all disappeared. The one that didn’t she had accidentally poked with a stick and made it bleed. It took a long time, though - you could still see faint marks months later but then one day I realised they were gone and that was that.

Starcircle · 16/01/2023 22:55

My son has a small bald patch on the crown of his head from chicken pox. I think there is usually one especially bad pock that is called the herald spot or something and that’s the most likely to scar. I wish that we had got the vaccine now because his hair hasn’t regrown two years later. So sorry your son has suffered so much! I hope he isn’t left with any scars.

Pallisers · 16/01/2023 22:58

You poor things. My oldest had them at a similar age - not as bad as your boy but still fairly covered. no scars.

I found oatmeal baths a godsend.

Also if he does have a couple of scars, there is a scar reduction cream sold over the counter in the US - probably also in UK. It is called Mederma here. My dd had surgery and the surgeon recommended a silicone based cream for scar reduction.

JoeMaplin · 16/01/2023 22:58

Poor baby. All I can add is that 2 of my 4 had it that bad, and both (now 16 and 19) have beautiful skin. It helps that they were not old enough to scratch (both about 9 to 12 months). Dd1 has one scar on her face, just a tiny pit. Dd2 none. It is almost I believe when you see 100s and 100s of spots like your little one has, but honestly it is true.

JoeMaplin · 16/01/2023 22:59

*unbelieveable

Youdoyoubabe · 16/01/2023 22:59

Keep him out of the sun completely until they have totally gone.

urrrgh46 · 16/01/2023 23:06

The plastic surgeon recommended bio oil when my son had stitches in his face. He was teenage though so check it's ok for a young child.

My now 16yr old had bad chicken pox and only has a couple of scars and they're on his body.

Aw OP I'm so pleased it healed up! Looks lovely!

Annietulloch123 · 20/04/2023 00:16

What did you use to clear it @indigo277
sea moss / vitamin e oil?

Just saw this post and so good to hear your boy recovered well! I wanted to ask how it looks now?

My 2yr old daughter had CP 1 month ago, it wasn't that bad, but lots of spots on her belly and back. It all healed but left a lot of white looking scars (not hollow, just white), and some red marks. Some are on her face.

I am so terrified that these will stay and currently eating myself up for being a bad mum and not using some special creams to help healing at the time! Is there any chance they would fade away and not be visible with time? Some people tell me shes only 2 do it will go away, but there are plenty of people with childhood CP scars... and she has so many! It feels like white ones are past the time of being able to do anything... or am I just panicking?

indigo277 · 03/11/2024 17:35

Hey everyone sorry I have only just seen the recent comments.
I used seamoss gel, vitamin e oil and also made him seamoss smoothies to help him heal from within too.
This is his back now- there are still some faint white marks but I think as he goes they will blend in even more. Hope your little ones are ok xxx
