Anyone's child had a supernumerary tooth removed?

DS (7) has an extra tooth blocking the way of his adult molar coming through. Baby tooth still in place. The dentist did an X-ray and has referred us to the hospital to have it removed under GA

I think it's fairly rare but wondering if anyone else has been through this and can offer advice - did the adult tooth come through wonky - and how was the op?

Sorry it's not a molar it's one of his front middle top teeth

Yes my daughter did but it wasn't located til she was 16. She kept having nosebleeds and had a scan after cauterization didn't work and they found the tooth growing upwards into her nasal cavity!!

Ds did, had it removed when his adult teeth were starting to come through at odd angles. His teeth aren't straight but because of other health issues he was refused braces. They did improve once all the teeth came through but are not as straight as he'd like.

Thanks for replying. Dentist said we could wait a couple of years to get it removed but my feeling is the sooner it is out the better. I guess it also depends on how long the wait is to be seen....

Oooh I had one of these, bottom from teeth!
Had it out under GA and the adult teeth came through fine if wonky and so I had braces after (lots of other wonky teeth too)
I was about 11, the worst but by far was the needle for the GA. I had other adult molars out to make space and the biggest issue was wound care and avoiding a dry socket x

My colleague's son just had this aged 10. I think you are right to try to get it done asap. His tooth is coming through fine now. She said he was in pain for a couple of days after the op but all fine since.

Yes although it wasn't affecting his other teeth, it was further back. GA. 10 minutes, job done.

Yes dd did this year. She had a supernumerary milk tooth and then an adult one came through too! She’s 12 now but was 11 when they removed it, it was near the top canine and there was a lot of discussion over which one to remove/which was the supernumerary one as it was completely fully formed with a massive root. She had it done at our usual dentist (it was the orthodontist who requested it) with local anaesthetic (numbing gel first) she didn’t even flinch. The next day she woke up covered in blood but it healed quickly and she didn’t have any pain. The dentist said no food for the rest of the day apart from ice cream which made her happy.

Ds had 10 removed aged 10 then another 4 removed aged 13. One was left and a chain attached to pull it down as it wasn’t deformed like all the others (a lot were in the roof of his mouth). Both ops done under GA he did get an infection but antibiotics sorted it out. He’s had braces since age 11. 16 now and still has a lot of work to do. Might need an implant of the tooth they pull down doesn’t work out (gap right at the front)

He wasn’t in pain after the removals just uncomfortable for a few days

Hi sorry bringing up an old thread again. I was just wondering if you managed to get the tooth out? My daughter is 6 and has 3. She has had her baby teeth taken out under ga in the hopes the supernumerary come down themselves but no sign so far. More then likely will need another ga to get the supernumerary out when she is older

supernumerarytooth · 28/08/2023 19:56

DD had an appointment at hospital in March where they took X-rays etc and now we are waiting for her op date they said it could be up to a year and will be under GA

They are going to attach a small gold chain to the adult tooth incase it doesn't come down on it's own in which case they will have to put a little brace on it to bring it down.

Ah OK. Yes her adult teeth are really pushed over to the side from what I saw in the xray so that sounds like something she will have too. They told me around 7 or 8 is a good age for the surgery so sounds like the timing will work out well for you.

TakeMe2Insanity · 28/08/2023 20:52

Interesting reading these experiences. DS is 7, has one as one of his front teeth. Dentist seemed convinced it would drop out and the new adult would grow but no sign of wobbling. Sounds like we definitely need to go back.

My brother had this, he had an extra tooth growing between his front 2 at the top and a huge gap as a result (adult teeth). He had it removed age 9 under GA. Within months his front 2 teeth had closed the gap completely without braces!

Lulu123abc · 29/08/2023 08:06

Oh that's great to hear the gap closed so quickly! Thank you. How was he after the surgery?

modgepodge · 29/08/2023 08:47

If I’m honest I don’t really remember very clearly as I was only 12 or 13 at the time, sorry not very helpful! I don’t remember it being a huge drama though.

Hi OP. Can you explain this little chain thing a bit more? Has your child had the op? Found out today my 9 year old boy needs an op to sort out some supernumerary teeth also. He has two teeth growing sideways in the gum blocking the adult teeth from coming down..
hes waiting for assessment but I wanted to know more already to be prepared!

My son also had this last year when he was 6. He had an extra tooth coming out behind his top front milk teeth. We went to have it out privately, and now his adult tooth it coming out. His front milk tooth came out too during the extraction. His adult tooth is all grown now, it is at an angle though as the extra tooth he had pushed it a bit, and I assume it won't straighten, so he will need braces at some point.
