Hip Dysplasia question

DD is 8.5 months and fiiiiiinally free from her pavlik harness clinic. Our last appointment was so speedy that I totally forgot to ask the questions I wanted:

Does she now count as having hip dysplasia still, or is she cured? Like, do we still have to consider the hip could get mishapen again as she grows or is that it now?

Do we need to mention it if she starts eg dance or gymnastics classes?

Hip is a good shape now so hooray. We’ll see them again in June but will probably forget to ask then too!

Hi

I don’t know the correct medical answer to your question but I did have hip dysplasia myself as a baby (treated with surgery and spica cast).

The hip issues didn’t really cause me any serious issues growing up and I don’t think my parents ever mentioned it to sports coaches (I was a very sporty child). It did however affect my technical execution of some movements but that was never a problem at a recreational level.

I had some minor issues when I went though growth spurts and now get some aches if I sit in the same position for too long or it is very cold. Again though it is nothing significant.

My mum knew other children who had hip dysplasia and I think that some had further issues when they were older but I couldn’t be certain. I’m now nearly 40 and haven’t needed any further treatment. My DD was checked when she was born but was clear.

I think staying active helped me a lot.

Good luck and I hope that your DD’s hips stay healthy.

My DD (now 12) had hip dysplasia and was in a pavlik harness for months as a baby. After she was out of her harness I think we had check ups and x rays at the hip clinic every 6 months until she was 3. Then she was officially signed off.

She had some trouble with sitting cross legged on the floor at nursery where her muscle growth had been affected by the harness position by this had resolved itself by reception age.

I don’t think we ever needed to mention it to class/group leaders, but we did tell school/nursery so she wouldn’t get in trouble for not ‘sitting nicely’ because she couldn’t tolerate bending that way for long. She does a lot of sport and she’s not had any problems since.

I had a harness as an infant. Wasn’t too bad the rest of childhood but I had major surgery (PAO) age 22 and then a total hip replacement earlier this year at 43.
