Fretting. Toddler not eating and now refusing drinks.

My toddler isn’t a great eater at the best of times but he seems a bit under the weather at the moment. He doesn’t have any obvious symptoms like a temperature or sickness but he has had a very runny nose / cold.

He has eaten poorly all week and yesterday had a bit more but today we are back to nothing. Tiny mouse sized portion of cheerios for breakfast, refused lunch, had an Ella’s kitchen bar after nap, now refusing dinner. He’s also barely drank anything.

DH just says he’s fine and under the weather and I’m guessing no one can do much because no obvious symptoms but I’m really stressing he’s going to get so dehydrated.

Have you tried ice lollies? I have had some success with them when mine are not well.

Getinajollymood · 26/12/2022 17:46

Thanks, I can try that, see if the co op is open.

Focus on getting liquids in him. Is he doing wee's still?

The first thing a GP would do is probably the liquid test. Get some dioralyte and use a syringe to give him a small amount every 15min. Keep a lot of how much he takes and how often he wee's,

Getinajollymood · 26/12/2022 17:51

I changed his nappy just and while it had been weed in there was barely anything from a few hours Sad He’s just had a little drink but it’s just such a worry. He was really sweaty after his nap as well but had a normal temperature.

Does he have a sore throat or sore teeth at all?

BaublesandBangles · 26/12/2022 17:53

Yogurt, ice lolly, icecream, fruitshoot all worth a try.

tiredmumma8696 · 26/12/2022 17:54

Is there anything he really likes to drink? We often give apple juice cartons or even get fruit shoots which we don't usually give unless a treat.
Liquid food will also help, ice cream, yoghurts etc.
Hope they get better soon

Getinajollymood · 26/12/2022 17:54

Possibly - I can’t see any teeth coming but I do think that’s possible. He has had a couple of spots on his face and I think that happens when his dribble goes a bit acidic (still has a dummy for sleep.) And I do think he may have a sore throat. I mashed a potato and carrots for dinner with some butter and milk and some peas. He’s picked a few peas out.

I know - I know if he’s feeling grotty he won’t want to eat and I know toddlers regulate their appetite. But I am worried.

As the others have said it's the liquid that matters most. Things you can try with a lot of liquid in them;

  • ice lollies
  • jelly
  • yogurt or frozen yogurt
  • fruits like tinned mandarin segments
  • regular squirts of juice given in something like a calpol syringe.

I hope he feels better soon.

Getinajollymood · 26/12/2022 17:55

Thanks, I might try some juice with a syringe actually.

Give him some calpol and try with a drink after it starts to work. He might have a sore throat or ear.

CrabbyCat · 26/12/2022 18:02

The not drinking thing is worrying, dehydration can make them poorly quite quickly. I'd try syringing in something like 5 ml of diluted juice / water / squash every 5 min. I'd also keep an eye on nappies as well as temperature. If he'll open his mouth and let you look with a torch / phone light, it would be worth checking what his tonsils are like.

Getinajollymood · 26/12/2022 18:26

Thanks. He’s had a bit to drink, almost half a cheese sandwich and a satsuma so hoping he’s starting to feel better. I know toddlers are funny eaters sometimes but I’m sure mine is at the extreme end of it!

When DS was sick like that as a toddler I used to gvie him water in a baby bottle - it's comforting for them and they usually will drink
