Newborn cold

DH and two teens have had this horrible cold that's been going around, they have all been wiped out with it for a week. My 9 weeks old seems to have caught it. It's like a heavy cold. I have rang 111 and they have said there's nothing much they can do. His breathing seems ok and he's not sucking his chest or tummy in.

He is however terribly congested, he wants his dummy for comfort but then has to spit it out to breathe, he's feeding and taking all of his bottle but finding it difficult, he seems to be gulping it very quick. He's asleep now quite contentedly but it's just so heartbreaking, he's not a crier at all so it's been awful to hear him crying, he's getting really upset and the little bottom lip trembles

He's having calpol and I'm going to try the shower for the steam in the morning. Any other tips to help him feel better. What a rubbish first Christmas!!

Have whatever he sleeps in tilted (we used to stick books under one end under the legs). This can help it to drain. Him feeding is a good sign.
It's miserable I know - I currently have an ill toddler - and just makes Christmas feel very tiring which is such a shame as I was looking forward to it!

Aww I had this when mine was that age. She's 5 months now.
I was so worried and anxious.
You can get nasal drops and sprays for babies.
There is the snuffle babe drops and calpol nasal spray. You put it in a few mins before feeding.
We also got the snuffle babe vapour rub and put it on her babygro.
And the calpol plug ins with the refills as we used one each night. They only last a few hours.

We saw the GP and they said don't bother with cough medicine as it doesn't actually help babies at all when they're coughing.
I hope he gets well soon and that you all have a lovely Christmas!

Nasal drops or spray and then use a snot sucker before feeding. Also a humidifier is good if you have one.

We came out of hospital yesterday after being in all week with my 6 week old who caught a cold and then got bronchiolitis. It was really awful seeing her tiny body hooked up to all these tubes. They go downhill so fast at this age, but also uphill pretty fast too.

Please watch out for a fever, if it gets to 38 go to a&e. Also lethargy, off his milk, or sucking in of his abdomen or head bobbing go in as well.

I wasn't sure whether I was doing the right thing taking her in and possibly exposing her to more germs in a&e, but she deteriorated while we were there.

If it is bronchiolitis it tends to get worse a few days in, the gp said day 3/4 and the dr in the hospital said day 4/5, so please please keep a close eye and if you're at all concerned take him to get checked out. It's been a horrific week.

Have a lovely Christmas (if you celebrate it) and I hope your little one feels better really soon Flowers

The Frida Mom nasal aspirator is a god send. Suck all the gunk out before feeds and sleep. Really great piece of kit.
Also the calpol plug in is great
