Anyone had their child on clarithromycin? Did it cause any side effects?

I’ve been on it myself many times as I’m allergic to penicillin and it always gives me an upset stomach but it does work amazingly - cured my severe infection when nothing else would- so worth keeping on with it unless side effects are really severe.

My 2.5 year old has just had this for a chest infection, we think it must have made him nauseous/caused stomach ache (he is non verbal so can't confirm) as he has been weird with food and VERY grumpy since. It's 5 days since he finished the course and he is just becoming more like his old happy self now.

My daughter is currently on day 5 of taking this. She's 5 and no side effects yet.

Thanks all. He's been off his food as it is. I read it can cause vomiting which I really hope he doesn't get. Especially over the Christmas weekend 😔 fingers crossed he doesn't get any side effects.
Amoxicillin caused him to have severe diarrhoea and his bum was absolutely awful. He screamed bloody murder every time I changed him which was 10+ times a day.
Wish me luck

I have it as allergic to penicillin, and it makes me feel sick and leaves a horrible taste in my mouth, so this is why he probably isn't eating.

hope he recovers soon!

m1s · 23/12/2022 10:54

@melissasummerfield he hasn't started it yet. Waiting for it to be dispensed by pharmacy. I think the reason why he has no appetite is because he has a very heavy snotty nose and so things probably don't taste of anything or don't taste very nice to him. Did you find that taking it with a full meal helps the nausea? Or not so much? He usually eats a pretty good breakfast so hoping that helps to reduce any gastro side effects (if they occur)

My daughter was off her food as she's had a severe sore throat and mouth ulcers. She's allergic to penicillin hence being prescribed this. She's just back on her food now. The biggest struggle has been getting her to take it as it's not nice tasting and has a strong lingering after taste. I hope your son is better soon.

No side effects but it didn’t clear up a bout of tonsilitis.

clipclop5 · 27/12/2022 14:44

DD had it a few months ago - side effects wise it wasn’t as bad as other antibiotics but still unpleasant! The main thing was it gave her a horrible taste in her mouth which is apparently very common, along with a bit of nausea and sensitivity to sun (although that won’t matter at the minute)

Vebrithien · 27/12/2022 14:51

DS2i s allergic to penicillin, so was on this recently (chest infection?

We found having a spoonful of strongly flavoured yoghurt, or his dose of Calpol ready to pop into his mouth as soon has he has swallowed the liquid, really helped with the vile aftertaste.

He did go off his food a bit, and halfway through the course, he did have looser/more frequent poops.

Don't k own about DC but it gives me the most terrifying nightmares. Still take it though as it's the only thing that ever clears my chest infections up.
