9 month old hit head on wooden floor

My daughter is 9 months old next week and she’s trying to get crawling. She was on her hands and knees and then hit her head on our wooden floor. She usually is on her play mat but moved off to the side. She cried for 5 minutes and then was ratty for a while. No bump so far but bright red mark. Unsure what to do rang doctors for advice they said always get checked but my concern is sitting her in a&e and catching all the stuff that’s going round currently. Any advice?

She is crawling at 9 months old and literally got her head from the height of her own arms?

she will be fine.

Vimto1 · 22/12/2022 17:59

She fell from crawling height?

Very unlikely for this to be an issue at all

NorasMum22 · 22/12/2022 18:03

Ok thank you. First child worries sorry 😂 the red mark has been there over an hour so was concerned

Was on hands and knees crawling and bumped head on floor? If so I wouldn't worry OP. Keep a close eye tonight but doesn't sound like a concerning injury.

If she's got to 9 months and this is the first time she has hit her head you have been doing very well!

honestly this will happen daily for a while. It's your new normal

TunaSpaghettiSub · 22/12/2022 18:05

I'm sure she will be absolutely fine. Keep an eye on her but for this kind of injury a and e would just give her a quick once over and say keep an eye out for signs of concussion (even though she won't get concussion but they need to say this)
Speaking from experience off 4 children and lots of banged heads x

NorasMum22 · 22/12/2022 18:05

Aw thank you! Yes been lucky so far which is why I think it’s worried me. You read scary thing from just little bumps to the head and the doctors said any bump go to a&e ugh

Thank you! Ah with 4 I’m sure you’ve had plenty!!

A&e will only be interested if it's a fall of over one metre, or there are signs of a head injury. Don't worry!

Buy a child head protection cushion from amazon, it's the one worn like a back pack and there's a cushion behind the head. There's another type that's worn like a hat, but it offers no real protection I found. At that age, for me it honestly saved my little ones head on countless occasions!!

I have and it's horrible I know.
Dd1 once under husbands watch, rolled off the car seat (he was changing her nappy on the back seat in a car park) onto the concrete floor and got a massive red graze on her head. She was only just 1 year old and I nearly killed him 😅 a&e hardly bothered, did a once over and sent us on our way. I have some lots of a and e for banged heads, mainly the first 2 children. Number 3 and 4 I've been much better judging it needs medical attention or not (but I still worry all the same!)

NorasMum22 · 22/12/2022 18:16

Oh my gosh I can imagine 😂 aw well thank you for taking the time to reassure me!!

oh great idea thank you. I need something for the front of her head that seems to be the way she goes haha!

Don't go buying her a helmet, that's just daft. It's just what happens with babies and toddlers, they bang their heads frequently when learning to walk/run etc. If they can't be consoled, start vomiting, becoming drowsy, lose consciousness, or there is a lot of blood, then get it checked out.

In two kids, I've only ever got one head injury checked out - that was an ambulance job after a fall of 6ft onto gravel, at a very dangerous angle for her neck, and a lot of blood!

She has balance issues (unrelated to above), has a brain tumour, and several operations on her brain/head in the last year. She hits her head about half a dozen times a day (no exaggeration) sure to get wobblyness. I'm yet to deem any of them serious enough for hospital - they've been minor cuts, bruises and bumps only.

It seems horrifying at first, when they are tiny, but then whacking their head does become pretty normal. Just make sure you know the symptoms to watch out for.

NorasMum22 · 29/12/2022 22:29

I know I’m not buying a helmet. I was being polite.

Thanks for your message. I’m sure I’ll get used to the bumps and falls but best to be safe.

Thanks

She’ll be fine. She’ll be bumping herself left right and centre soon. Dd tumbled head first down the stairs when she was only a few months older than that. She was fine. I took longer to recover!
