Hi
Has anyone had any experience successfully keeping a Hickman line site dry while washing their child?
My 7 year old loves baths, which are sadly out of the question for as many years as he has the hickman line, but I can't even shower him without getting the site wet. I was told not to get the ends wet (which I manage ok by putting them in a zip lock bag), as well as the actual wound site. It's not high up, like I've read a lot are usually placed; it's quite low on his side, almost at waist level. So there's no avoiding getting it wet. Why can't I find any solutions anywhere?!
I've read some people use clingfilm. That was a massive fail this evening.
The Tegaderm dressing supplied by the first hospital was great and waterproof. However, it was incredibly painful to remove. The dressings supplied by the next 2 hospitals are pretty useless as far as I can tell - they peel around the edges and are coming up within hours of them being put on; so there's no hope of them staying on during a shower...yet they don't completely come off. Although not as painful to remove as the Tegaderm, they are still painful, so i don't want to be changing it daily.
Does anyone have any suggestions that worked for them?
