My daughter has been pretty unwell for since Saturday afternoon.
Very High temp (40+) sore throat, shivering, generally unwell

We saw the Dr yesterday... said almost certainly strep A and gave her antibiotics.

She spent all of yesterday afternoon (having seen dr mid afternoon) on the sofa watching disney plus looking awful
temp still around 40 even after calpol.

She slept for 13.5 hours last night.
Came downstair this morning, had her ABs and a drink (and a strop because she doesnt like ABs but obviously she has to take them)
Her temp was 38.7 (less than 39.6 at bed time) and lowest in a long time.
she point blank refused calpol as she "doesnt like" that either and given the stress of taking ABs i decided to fight that battle a little bit later...

she then went back to bed to lie down, fell straight back to sleep and has now been sleeping for another 3.5 hours and counting (on top of 13.5 hours last night)
She was only awake for 45 mins max

I think i know that letting a sleeping poorly child sleep is the right thing to do but should I be worried?

WWYD

Have other children who have had strep A slept a LOT?

No. I wouldn't be worried. She's got abx and once they start to kick in she will feel better. As long as she's drinking, weeing and taking her abx, let her sleep it off.
Also regarding the temp. Alternate between ibuprofen and calpol - you may find ibuprofen will deal better with high temps. X

As long as she's rousable and not confused when she wakes, I think that's fine, tbh.

YukoandHiro · 20/12/2022 14:03

Check every couple of hours that you can rouse her easily and make sure she drinks a glass of water every time. Otherwise let her sleep it off. Don't panic too much because she got antibiotics promptly. They take about 48 hours to have full effect so I'm sure she'll be feeling much better tomorow

Keep an eye and try and get ibuprofen into her it lasts longer than calpol and you need less of it. The strawberry one isn't offence.

How are they now?

purpledalmation · 21/12/2022 23:01

If she well enough to get in a strop then I wouldn't be too worried. Just make sure she take the antibiotics, also calpol and ibuprofen for her fever and pain.

If she becomes lethargic, not passing much urine and not drinking get her reassessed.

My son had strep A (confirmed by swab) couple months ago and now got scarlet fever. Both times he’s sleeping 14-16 hrs a day. Sleep is healing but keep an eye for dehydration, esp with the fever

I’d contact the doctor again if she’s no better.
I’d also get some cal poly meltlets for under her tongue if she’s not keen on liquid.
all mine were drowsy with strep A, but not that unwell.
