3 year old temp not staying down

My little boy (3) finished a course of antibiotics yesterday for suspected strep a (test ended up coming back negative but we were told to keep the antibiotics going).

as of 4.30pm yesterday (Saturday) he has had raging temps of up to 39.9 that we are struggling to get down. It comes down to around 38 but after around 3 hours it’s going back up again into the 39s. He’s got a snotty nose and cough. I’m so so worried how high his temp keeps going however I have really bad anxiety anyway, can it be normal for it to keep spiking this high for 24 hours?

currently awaiting a call back from 111 but trying to call myself down.

What have you been giving him for the temp? X

DarkKarmaIlama · 18/12/2022 17:49

Alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen. I always found ibuprofen to be superior in bringing down temps.

WorriedMumZZ · 18/12/2022 17:53

That would’ve been helpful to say! calpol and Nurofen. It comes down a little bit but as soon as it starts to wear off it’s shooting up again 😣my husband thinks I’m being too anxious

Why does your DH think that? Has he read up on Strep A and temperatures?

PinkPlantCase · 18/12/2022 17:57

Gently OP I think you are being too anxious.

How is your DS in himself? Apart from a snotty nose and a cough which tbh is almost a constant state for toddlers in winter anyway.

So long as he doesn’t seem especially poorly in himself I probably wouldn’t even take his temperature.

OPs DS tested negative for strep A

OPs DS tested negative for strep A

Sorry, completely missed that but God knows how.

Tulipvase · 18/12/2022 18:00

I think it’s more about how they are than how high the temp is. Mine have all run really high temps, some children just do.

WorriedMumZZ · 18/12/2022 19:28

Thanks for your replies. It was 2 weeks ago he tested negative for strep so the worries are creeping back in!

Im just concerned how long it’s lasting, he’s my first and he’s only started childcare in October so not used to him being this poorly and not known such high temps last so long xx

OP I’d assume it’s just a different virus, when my DS started nursery we had back to back illnesses for the first few months. Like February to May 🙈 You of course worry that it’s the same bug but worse but on the odd occasion that we did go the GP they would just say that it was a new virus. They just catch them so close together when they first start nursery that it doesn’t seem like they get a break between them.

It does generally improve as they get older and their immune system builds up.

I wouldn’t worry about strep in this instance, he had a negative test and he’s been in antibiotics this whole time. Cough and runny nose are classic viral symptoms.

Thank you for your reassuring words. It’s just so scary isn’t it. 111 advised we take little man up to a&e as his skin has started going blotchy / mottled 🙁

High temp shouldn't last 2 weeks. Your doing the best thing taking him to a&e.

YoBeaches · 18/12/2022 21:37

It's quite possible that what he had two weeks ago is not what he has got now. With starting nursery and this time of year viruses are rife.

Though in theory you have ruled out strep a and Scarlett fever given he has had antibiotics. My 3 yr old as a weird virus at the mo, high temps, skin on and off appears mottled, she had a spotty rash that came and went. GP couldn't diagnose so we are watchful waiting at the moment. she seems to be improving on her own with alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol to keep the temp down, and sleeping with me so I can monitor. But it's been days and days.

As ever though if you're not sure then go. At that age they still can't communicate very well so follow your instinct.

Luckymummytoone · 18/12/2022 22:01

My sons skin was mottled and it turned out to be strep (among other symptoms). But there’s so many virus’ going around and it can be quite common with high temps too but best to get checked. Hope all is ok xx

PinkPlantCase · 19/12/2022 07:12

Did you go to A&E in the end OP? Hope everything’s okay x

gottogo23 · 19/12/2022 07:26

Remember that a fever is the bodies way of actually killing the virus. You could be delaying recovery by not allowing the fever to happen. Just give Calpol if the temperature gets too high (over 40)

How is everything this morning @WorriedMumZZ?
