4 week old gagging

Hi, hopefully this is the right board, I'm just waiting on hold to 111 but thought I'd post here in case anyone has any advice.

My DS will be 4 weeks old on Monday and this evening he's gagged twice on nothing while sleeping (flat), not breathing while he's gagging. This happened within a few minutes of each other and both times I got him upright and patted his back and it resolved (although he didn't wake up). He's been a bit congested the last few days, could this have been mucous and if so will he get it up himself? I'm terrified it'll happen while I'm asleep and he'll stop breathing! Can anyone advise? His colour is good and he has wet and dirty nappies as normal, feeding is fine although he's a bit fussy with it.

Currently running the shower with him in the bathroom to try and help with the congestion.

Thanks

I didn't want to scroll by when no one else had commented, if you have any concern your four week old has had periods of not breathing you should call 111 and get proper medical advice.not from people on the internet. And obviously 999 if necessary. I hope baby is o

*ok

Is it free a feed? My daughter used to do this even upto an hour after a feed due to bad reflux.

lamaze1 · 17/12/2022 20:50

Sorry should have proof read. That should have said, is it after a feed.

If you have the money an owlet can be helpful. Not necessary for everyone but I've found it helpful overnight and when my baby is sick. They're expensive but for me as my baby was 24 weeker, I needed the reassurance.

Sounds like reflux which can be made worse when they're congested. My DD was bad with it and my new 3 week old is also going this. They can make some pretty scary noises when they're suffering. If it's mucous related it should resolve itself when the congestion clears, if it's reflux proper it will take longer to go away.

bravotango · 17/12/2022 21:24

Thanks all - I think it's possibly reflux too. Spoke to a friend who's a GP who thinks this too but to ring 999 if any concerns over his breathing, which I don't have at the moment. Will try to get him seen by a GP on Monday - I was on hold to 111 for over an hour by which point I had spoken to my friend so think I'll just observe him overnight. Thanks again

If it is reflux it apparently helps if the baby's cot is at an incline so the head is higher up. Tbh it didn't really make much of a difference to us. Hope things get resolved asap for you op and congratulations.

Thank you! Today I've been feeding him little and often and sitting him upright for 15 mins after feeds and he seems much better, less spitting up and less burpy when I pat his back so thinking it is reflux. Will contact GP when it opens tomorrow. Thanks again

Great news. Pleased to hear he seems better today. Like you say it's still a good idea to speak to the GP, who might prescribe baby gaviscon initially if it is reflux.
