I’ve just seen Teen DC has redness on their toes which hurt, not that they’ve said anything. First thought is chilblains but they’ve been indoors with the heating on, although don’t wear socks (sensory).

Will head to chemist tomorrow but out of curiosity what do they look like to you?

They could be chilblains but equally they look like possible blisters; have they recently worn new shoes without socks that might have rubbed?

Bbq1 · 15/12/2022 16:08

Chilblains. My teen ds suffers exactly the same. They looked identical to yours daughters toes this time last year. I was so worried I took him to a & e at one point. He also suffers with his hands sometimes. Chilblains are incredibly painful
Better atm because he now wears socks around the house and gloves outside.

wow so surprised you can get chilblains in a warm house?! Can’t see it being blisters as she’s not been in shoes in ages

Yes I've got them too at the moment and I barely leave the house. I only started getting them 5 years ago and now get them every winter. So painful and annoying.

BowiesJumper · 16/12/2022 21:19

Yes they look exactly how mine did. They’re itchy as hell! My heating was fine, but it was getting cold feet during the day and the going into the warm that did it.

WhistPie · 16/12/2022 21:21

Those are chilblains, wear bedsocks if possible!

WhistPie · 16/12/2022 21:24

I've not had chilblains since I started wearing bedsocks, I think I must have been hanging my feet out of bed at night!

Our house is very warm but ds still developed them. Despite the warmth he extremities still get very cold on some people. As a pp said coming into a warm environment from cold temperatures is the cause. They are not directly caused by the warmer temperature.

I used to get chilblains as a child and now they’ve come back this year. They are the most painful thing. Nothing helps me.

Fiveinthebed22 · 17/12/2022 10:08

Took her to pharmacist (well photos) as it’s spread to other toes but he thought hand foot mouth or second to that chilblains. But not dc3 has a sore throat & blister on tongue so who knows 🤦🏻‍♀️

she says they’re not itchy & only sore when touched / walking.

either way it’s no treatment so I’ll just keep an eye on them

What a shame. It looks like chilblains to me. I have chilblains on my toes the now and they are extremely painful. It started on one toe and is now on several toes. My toes are swelling, red hot, really itchy and really painful, especially to walk. Avoid heating his feet up to fast. Before I realised heat was making them worse, I went for a bath. Oh my goodness, the pain was horrific. My pharmacist told me to take painkillers and ibuprofen for the swelling. I find moisturising my toes helps aswell.

Bestcatmum · 17/12/2022 12:10

They are chilblains, I see them everyday at work - podiatrist - other things they could be, covid foot looks like this, blisters, insect bites.
But most likely chilblains IMO.
Don't put any direct heat on them or they could burst so no hot waterbottles, electric blankets or close proximity to radiators or woodburners.
How about furry bootee slippers?

Fiveinthebed22 · 17/12/2022 15:19

Thanks all I’m thinking chillbalins too, one toe in particular has got worse will swelling.

she will tolerate slippers sometimes but doesn’t want anything on them just now. She does sleep with an electric blanket under her sheet but it’s lowest setting overnight so hopefully it’s ok for her feet?

she doesn’t do baths so that’s not an issue so I’ll just try keep the house the same temperature, which is easier now it’s over zero outside!

My son age 17 has got red swollen itchy toes over last couple of days and I think it’s chilblains. Did your dd get better? Any advice?

Fiveinthebed22 · 10/01/2023 12:36

Yeah was definitely chilblains they got really horrible 😷, they’re still there but fading and they’re not bothering her anymore but it took weeks. Only advice I have is to not heat them up as that made hers much worse, so she slept with feet out the covers at night etc. I still can’t believe she got them!

UnknownElement · 10/01/2023 12:44

She probably stuck her feet on a radiator to warm them up. I was told as a child that is you put cold extremities on a direct heat source you can get chilblains.

Nearlythere3 · 10/01/2023 13:21

Thanks, Sorry to hear she’s still got them. My son’s came after a shower so I think from cold feet to hot feet? Just thought it was weird for a teenager. Have heard it can be a covid symptom but no other symptoms here.

Spaghetti201 · 11/01/2023 09:55

Seems there’s a link with covid and chilblains
