DS16 throat infection

Can anyone offer any insight on this? DS16 now deals with the GP himself as they won't deal with me anymore, since he's now classed as an adult. He's had a respiratory/throat infection with asthma flare up and persistent cough which is slightly improved today. He's has steroids and a course of clarithromycin, not yet finished. He's been back to the GP two further times. The second time they prescribed a nasal spray. The third time they've prescribed some doxycycline and told him to start it immediately. They didn't give any info on how to take this - I've looked it up on NHS myself and the side effects look potentially pretty unpleasant. Can anyone shed any light on why amoxicillin hasn't been prescribed and why the doxycycline has been prescribed? I'm obviously concerned with the strep throat outbreak but he doesn't seem badly unwell at all and I wonder whether finishing the clarithromycin would be reasonable before starting on the doxycycline. He needs to get back to school asap as in an exam year and if the doxycycline is going to cause a bad tummy, that's not ideal. Neither of these antibiotics seem to be first line for strep a so I don't know if that's what the concern is and I haven't been there to ask the questions. Any input welcome.

Clarithromycin is an alternative treatment for strep A if allergic to penicillin. Although I assume your son isn’t. I would finish the course, else it can build antibiotic resistance. I don’t know about the doxycycline but I’ve taken it previously and suffered no side effects.

Possibly due to shortage of certain antibitoics?
