Hi all I'm so confused and just wandered how everyone would take this. My dd had a cough for 2 weeks and then went away and came back worse. Monday she was flushed, headache very snotty and achy legs along with constant cough. She also has asthma so this triggered it and she was needing her inhaler more often. Managed get a gp appointment today who seemed very rushed and quickly checked her over and said she's very wheezy, no tempreture and she will give antibiotics and test for strep though she doesn't have the symptoms such as red cheeks, tongue etc and ill get results tomorrow and if she gets worse in the meantime ring back. After leaving a decided to look on the NHS app to see what she out it down to viral, chest or asthma because she never really said what the antibiotics were for. After going on the consultation bit where it says problem, the gp has wrote scarlet fever along with treat as cold. I'm unsure as to why she would put scarlet fever if that's what she suspects and not say. I also thought antibiotics were no good for colds anyway which makes me think she's treating for scarlet fever. She also said to send her school of well but I thought if you had scarlet fever you needed stay at home for 24 hours after starting antibiotics. I'm now unsure as to what say to the school. The lady in the chemist said maybe she's put that down as a precaution but the gp didn't mention it to me at all. Is there any difference in scarlet fever and strep or is it the same thing. Thanks

Scarlet fever is caused by strep yes.
But don’t panic as long as your child seems alright - it can be really mild. My child had it early this year and he was just a bit under the weather for a few days and had a fever that was easily controlled with Calpol. Basically everyone catches it in childhood (when they test teens and adults basically everyone has antibodies) and for some kids it’s really unpleasant, occasionally it can be dangerous, but a lot of the time it presents like a cold.

Thankyou she does seem abit better today except the horrible cough. I'm really confused as to why the doctor has put in the nhs app the problem is scarlet fever but told me she doesn't think she's got strep but will test and get results tomorrow and send her school tomorrow if she's well. She didn't mention having scarlet fever at all I didn't know until I saw the app. I just don't really know what I'm meant to tell the school tomorrow. I don't want to send her in if she has got it and pass it onto others.

Have you started the antibiotics?
If you havent, then do tonight

Regardless if Scarlet Fever or not, she doesnt sound well enough to go to school
When you ring them tomorrow, You tell them the truth

The GP will be treating it as though she has it, even though the test isn't back yet. Because if she does have it, and you didn't get the antibitoics at the appt, you're being left even longer with her potentially becoming worse. The sooner its seen to, suspected, diagnosed, the sooner antibitoics can be given and she will start to feel better..
It seems to be how they're dealing with it tbh. Almost like not taking the risk, and imo, when there is a rise in cases and its causing fatalities, it's the right thing to do.
There is no need to panic, just make sure she takes the medicine and make sure she takes the full course.
Regarding school. I'd keep off for the rest of the week given its Thursday tomorrow anyway. Lots of rest and fluids and medicine. Hopefully she will be OK for Monday! X

I'll ring I'm school tomorrow. They'd probably expect her in wothout a definite diagnosis to be honest. She had alot of time off last year due to asthma, covid, chickepox and rsv and I ended up with 2 letters and a warning. I was so angry because they knew she was suffering. I won't be sending her In unwell and will explain tomorrow and hope they understand. I've had no letter regarding any cases at the school but then again we didn't that much woth covid either we had to go by ear
