Phlegm in nappy ?

Hello!

Little one (22m) has had a slightly productive cold for a few weeks. No temp, no sleepiness, still eating, drinking and daily bowel movements.

He got sent home from nursery yesterday for being sick. He's not actually been sick before. Only the once with them. Since then he's been his lively normal self. However I've noticed his dirty nappies seem phlegm like? Is that a thing with a viral cold / cough ??

Thanks !

Teething?

pharmacoco · 07/12/2022 13:36

Nope - we've got a full set !

I mean it can be. My 2.5 year old can have weird nappies when he has something viral, especially if he's bunged up.
When you say phlegm, like mucus?

IwillrunIwillfly · 07/12/2022 20:31

It's quite common, they tend to swallow all the snot/mucus they produce so it comes out the other end!

That's reassuring! We've had solid poohs for a while it was a surprise to see. I've got a photo I'm loathe to upload, but having had another glance at it, it very much resembles 'snot' tbh.

Yeah honestly don't stress. It can be norm when they've got something viral. The joys eh! X

Just as an update - woke up this AM and little one had coughed up sick and blood. Wouldn't eat. Off to the GP and it's a chest infection poor thing !

My DD had this - turns out it was due to coeliac disease. It's mucus produced in the bowel that is usually so mixed in with poo, you don't really see it. My DD's however, were big pieces of it; sometimes 50p size. I took her to the docs when I first noticed it and they sent away a couple of stool samples but they always came back negative for any infection / issues. It wasn't until she got a bit older and had more issues (gassy / big tummy / heartburn / headaches / diarrohea) that they finally did a blood test and her TTGA levels were so high (literally off the scale). She's now on a GF diet and we haven't noticed any more mucus. Probably worth speaking with the GP and see what they say

This is so interesting.
I have a thread on here regarding Coeliac recently because I'm being tested. I'm day 4 of upping gluten for 2 weeks before test and I've a rotten migraine (though chrinic migraine sufferer!), look about 9 months pregnant, mucus, sickness, pain in left side. I was certain it was Coeliac. Now I'm 100% doubting myself.

Justwingingitox · 09/12/2022 10:10

Certain it wasn't * sorry x

Notanotherwindow · 09/12/2022 10:12

Poor little guy. Hope he feels better soon.

Jaybird43 · 09/12/2022 10:19

@Justwingingitox - your symptoms sound exactly like my DDs (she was 6 when finally diagnosed). There's a really strong link in my family for it (my DS was diagnosed in October following an OGD and mildly raised TTGA (his was 49, DD's was over 250) and the only symptom he had was diarrhoea when he ate Weetabix!). My DD was super poorly and she was doubled over with stomach cramps, huge tummy (I look at photos now and can't believe how swollen it was), pain in her side, so much so that we ended up in A&E as she couldn't stand up with the pain and we thought she had an obstruction. Since being GF, if she comes into contact with gluten, she will have horrendous diarrhoea and stomach pains. It's a shame that so little is known about coeliac disease but gluten can cause so much damage to our bodies!

Justwingingitox · 09/12/2022 10:33

@Jaybird43 it's horrendous. It's the pain that gets me most of the time - I also get to the point I cannot walk or struggle to. And have been times where I've nearly dialled 999 or gone to a&e. I've never experienced so much wind in my life either. I'm awful for it! It's been going on a long while but I've put it off until it got increasingly worse just over a month ago when I decided to see a GP. I have also been tested for IBD but all came back of no concern. Phostate and something else came back low in bloods both times I've had it taken in the last month and, now doing another Coeliac test due to conflicting advice in the run up to the test the first time from a different GP. Fast forward to another GP and he's certain it's Coeliac so doing it all over again! Really feeling it this time though. I've lost 1st due to the ongoings! But my stomach makes me feel like I've put that back on over night!! I knew nothing about Coeliac before this.. and still quite clueless tbh. But if it is this - I'll do my research properly. Its overwhelming xx

Jaybird43 · 09/12/2022 12:02

Oh bless you @Justwingingitox - it is horrible, especially as cross-contamination for gluten is so dangerous - one gluten crumb can set your stomach recovery back by 6 months! My DD was at school after her diagnosis and the TA gave her garlic bread as she got confused between GF and dairy - poor DD was so poorly that she ended up having to come home due to the pain. I really hope you get some answers and feel better soon xx
