Positive Strep A / Scarler Fever stories please

My son (3) has started antibiotics today for suspected strep A. He has done a throat swab which we’re awaiting results for but doctor has started him on antibiotics this morning.

I struggle with anxiety and I’m driving myself insane with the latest news. Please can I have some positive stories of children who have had it and been ok?

pic of his ‘strawberry tongue’ that made me make the appointment. He’s not too bad in himself at the moment.

Ds had it aged 4. He was miserable for a couple of days but once 5e abs kicked in was fine and off skiing.

My son had Scarlet fever about 4/5 years ago. He was ill for a few days, but perked right up a day or so after starting the antibiotics. He's 11 now and no lasting problems.

Thank you everyone for replying. It’s settling to see the positive stories - way too easy to get lost reading the scary ones!

I have anxiety & panic disorder myself so trying not to spiral!! 😣

I had it when I was 3 - I'm now 40 infact I had both scarlet fever and measles together!

loislovesstewie · 06/12/2022 20:43

I had scarlet fever in 1963, had penicillin, clearly still here. Strangely enough my mum told the GP that it was scarlet fever, the GP thought it was rubella! Mum was adamant that she was right, she recognised the scarlet tongue, unlike the doctor. I was tested for rubella years later prior to having the vaccine, I had never had it.

DD had scarlet fever at about 3. She was very poorly before we started antibiotics but made a very quick recovery.

EllaPaella · 06/12/2022 20:48

My now 12 year old had scarlet fever when he was 5. I knew straight away it was scarlet fever as he had a sudden onset of sore throat and fever and the strawberry tongue was very pronounced.
Our GP prescribed antibiotics straight away and DS perked right up after only two doses. Was much much better by the following day.

I have a thread running re this - my three year old has just had it and been fine.

PerfectPrepPrincess · 06/12/2022 20:54

I'm starting to wonder if my 18mo had it a couple of months ago ... vaguely remember odd tongue and rash which we thought was a heat rash at the time. Don't think we even went to the doctors as she gets ill so often from nursery and wasn't that bad and whilst they're prompt at seeing her they rarely prescribe anything so we assumed its just another "manage at home" scenario...Will never know for sure though.

Suzi888 · 06/12/2022 20:55

DH had it and my aunt- no antibiotics, both ill but fine.

Wronglane · 06/12/2022 21:07

I can’t see a strawberry tongue in that pic!!

Tholeont · 06/12/2022 21:08

My now 13 year old had it at preschool and I don’t remember it being any worse than many of the other bugs they get frequently at that age. And because I wasn’t reading horror stories in the press at the time I don’t remember particularly worrying about it, although I am the world’s greatest worrier about the kids

LBOCS2 · 06/12/2022 21:29

Both my DDs currently have Scarlet Fever. They're ok, got all the symptoms but are a little under the weather rather than actively ILL. DD1 had it about 6 years ago and was fine then too, so I'm feeling quite relaxed about it all.

Except if I get it. I really really don't want it, it's horrible as an adult!

Kaffiene · 06/12/2022 21:44

DS is 4 and has it 3 bloody times! First time took ages to get diagnosed as kept getting fobbed off with it’s just a virus/ tonsillitis. 2nd & 3rd time get ABs as soon as I noticed his strawberry tongue. First picture is before antibiotics and second after a couple of days. Took about a week - 10 days each times to get back to full health

ChiefFinderOuter · 06/12/2022 21:50

My ds had had scarlet fever 3 times by the time he was 5. First time he was pretty poorly but the severity got less each time. Every time it was diagnosed quickly (it’s pretty darn obvious, he looked like a tomato), and ABs sorted him out straight away.

Logicalreasoning · 07/12/2022 22:45

Dd had scarlet fever aged 3, she’s now 10, she only had the rash and temp, didn’t need antibiotics, we thought it was chicken pox at first, but doctor said it was scarlet fever.
she had severe tonsillitis back in July, temp for 5 days, strawberry tongue antibiotics given and cleared up. She now has a cold ( right on cue as she seemed to get ill this time in December every bloody year) she’s had it since Saturday and seems to be the last legs. Says her throat is still sore but has not temp, and still good in herself. Just keeping an eye.. just in case she takes a turn for the worst.

babybythesea · 07/12/2022 22:54

Seven children in my school have had it. They were poorly to varying degrees but nothing sinister. The worst was a child who had two days of a high temp which Calpol brought down, but as soon as the Calpol wore off, it went up again. They have all had antibiotics and all except one are back at school, four of them with time left to go on their antibiotic courses. The staff fridge has so many labelled bottles there’s no room for anyones lunch! Nobody has even needed to get medical advice after the initial doctors visit - the antibiotics have worked very quickly and effectively. I know all this because with so many cases we’ve had long discussions with each set of parents.

My DB had scarlet fever in the 60s, he was fine, I never had it so didn't catch it off him, but these were the days when you had measles and mumps as we didn't have the injections then so it was probably just seen as another childhood illness. DH said that his DB had it also but none of the rest of the family caught it

Verite1 · 07/12/2022 22:57

My DD had scarlet fever when she was 2. We took her to hospital as we thought it was meningitis. She made a pretty prompt recovery when she started antibiotics (which were a nightmare to get down her)!

ScrappyCats · 07/12/2022 23:12

My DS had it when he was around 14 months old. He was in hospital for a couple of days to have intravenous antibiotics, then he was fine. He is a very healthy 17 year old now.

I thought it was scarlet fever very early on. The out of hours Dr, who came out during the night, brushed this away with “if this scarlet fever I’ll eat my hat” 🙄

If he’d prescribed antibiotics at that stage then DS wouldn’t have ended up having IV’s. All was still well in the end though.

TurquoiseBeach · 07/12/2022 23:37

My DD had it in 2014. I was surprised as thought it wasn't really around much anymore. She was given antibiotics pretty quickly and made a good and fast recovery.

EllaPaella · 08/12/2022 11:59

So my 8 year old has had strep throat confirmed today. He started with a high fever and sore throat yesterday afternoon. A class mate has the same. We have been given antibiotics which he started last night and so far he seems to have perked up a bit. He also has covid and this is all on the back of a 3 week cough/cold virus.
