If your child has eczema, what washing powder do you use?

Youngest DD’s eczema seems to be really aggravated at the moment. She has always had patches inside her elbows but now there are patches all over and I think it’s probably our current washing liquid to blame.

Two grubby kids in uniform and DH’s sports kit mean we need something that will get rid of stains and sniffs. I’d love the washing to still smell nice once dried but obviously would forego that for the sake of poor DD not itching!

I know there are recommendations online but can never be sure they aren’t paid adverts in reality so would love to hear what others use that still cleans well but doesn’t cause a reaction.

My ds has terrible eczema and the only thing we found that doesn’t aggravate it is persil bio and either comfort or fairy softener. We tried every non bio but it just wasn’t cleaning properly. The persil bio gets things clean and doesn’t make him itch at all. I can’t change softener though as others definitely make him react.

we use whatever bio powder is on offer. we don't find the brand making any difference.

we make sure to use the long cycles and an extra rinse which solved the issue for us.
plus no softener.

keep in mind that mould is a common allergen and short cycles, low temps don't get rid of that.

I used fairy non bio. My GP suggested fitting a water softener as we had really hard water. It really helped.

We usually use Persil non- bio but DDs eczema usually comes back in winter if she wears tights which she wanted to this year so we have switched back to the washing balls.

We've had these since they were babies and still working. Her football kit goes in and it gets clean but don't know about bad stains though. They're pretty good at getting white school collars clean. No smell though. But as PP said it can be fragrance that causes it

I'll look for a link.

My husband and daughter have ezcema and we've trialled a lot of different powders and liquids and to be honest as long as we stick to non bio and minimal, if any, fragrance we don't find a difference. No fabric softener or scented things and an extra rinse
My daughter's has flared up due to viral illness and the change in weather.

Violets is very good. But sadly expensive. But it is good so os their softener.

This is also good and the coconut softener smells lovely too.

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 08/12/2022 07:26

I think it's not so much that fragrance causes the reaction, just that if you rinse until there's no fragrance left, you've probably got rid of near enough all of what was deposited.

Can't find a link for my washing balls. I'd have to look if there is a name on them but have seen Eco-egg recommended

Choconut · 08/12/2022 07:35

Stop using anything that smells strongly is my advice - it only smells of chemicals anyway. Ecover or Waitrose sensitive were what I had to use with ds. If you can't get out every stain don't worry about it, better to have a child who isn't suffering.

Nimble laundry liquid, usually in the baby section of Tesco. £8 a bottle but often on discount.

Thanks all, lots to consider! I think there are probably a couple of different factors at play - the patches inside her elbows are the most stubborn/flared up, the recent patches elsewhere definitely do seem to be linked to washing liquid. Will switch things up and see if that helps.
