Dd has had a fever up and down for over a week now, it’s been from about 37 up to 38.8.
We haven’t seen a Doctor yet because it went away and I thought she was better, only for it to come back over the m weekend. I have called 111 twice and I haven’t been able to get help from them because they are too busy. I was told she needed to have medical contact within 6 hours, however 30 hours later and still waiting.

She’s been eating and drinking and playing, not as energetic as usual though.
I will hopefully get a GP appointment tomorrow but I’m really worried as to what this could be.
No indication of what has caused the fever. Also her eyes look a bit red.

Is she ok in herself? Playing, eating, drinking, empty bladder ok?
Definitely make a GP appt tomorrow. X

It could be viral OP- my DS2 would always get a fever like this. Would definitely ring the GP though as it could be ear infection or similar. Worth getting checked out tomorrow.

I had similar with my child a few months ago, on and off fever. Also with a cough though which was around for months. Ended up taking her to A&E where they thought it was tonsillitis. Got amoxicillin, it worked a little bit but then cough persisted so she was x-rayed and given a different antiB which cleared it up (finally!).

If 111 aren't calling back and you don't want to wait for GP take her to A&E if worried x thinking of you Flowers

We've just had exactly the same thing with my 4 year old. 2 days of fever so kept him at home then sent him to school. He still had a fever at night but he was fine during the day, so I left it for probably longer than I should have done. On Friday when he came out of school he looked very exhausted and flushed, didn't want to eat. We saw the GP and were prescribed antibiotics. The GP said his throat looked bad and as he'd had a fever for so long he probably needed the antibitoics. He has turned a corner today finally, so definitely worth seeing the GP.

It has probably been a week since he's eaten an actual meal and he is looking so thin bless him.

I'm so used to viral things needing to run their course I must admit I rarely take him to the GP and feel really bad that I almost didn't.

Hope your LO feels better soon!

Forgot to say, he was also complaining of sore eyes and they were a little red so sounds like the same bug!

I had it too, didn't need antibiotics but felt more rough than I have in years!

I know there is concern about at the moment because of the very sad reporting of the strep A cases, and rightly so for people to be vigilant. But I am amazed that people are suggesting A&E when I think the OP has reported that the child is still playing, eating and drinking and the fever is low grade. It feels to me, from reading threads on here over the last few years, that peoples perspective on childhood illness and how to deal with it has changed since covid. Obviously if there are red flags then a&e is an important option but it should really be the last resort.
OP I really hope your little one starts to feel better and you get the help you need.

I think there's the "normal" childhood illnesses such as pox, HFM, bronch.. which the majority of people have heard about in their life time or dealt with, and know a bit about.
Then theres the likes of strep a & scarlet fever to name the obvious two right now, since covid (which was a scary enough time for us all at some point throughout) - that after reading around/talking, the amount of people that haven't heard of or know the signs, or much about it.. is really high! And admittedly I was one of those. So it adds even more panic to what is already a scary nerving time when your children are poorly. Especially those that suffer with health anxiety like myself. It's just one of those things unfortunately, and the panic is easily set in to people with the likes of the news, social media, and so on.
Nobody has said take the child to a&e straight away, they just advised if OP felt concerned still and were wanting to swerve the wait to see a GP or the call back from 111 x
Hope all is OK OP x

Thanks everyone for the reassurance 🙂
DD has woken up with a lot more energy today, fever still there so we are going to the GP.

@Chocolatebutton0 I know this thread is a little old now, but would you mind letting me know what the GP said? Almost exact same thing happening to DS4 now Sad

Chocolatebutton0 · 01/03/2023 08:06

Hi @katem98 the GP had a look at her and couldn’t find the cause of the fever and it did get better itself quite quickly. They thought it could be a urine infection but that came back fine as well. It’s worrying when the fever lasts, have you been able to see a GP? Hope your son feels better soon.

@Chocolatebutton0 Thank you for replying! My daughter is under urology so have a ton of dipsticks here, will dip his urine when he next decides to go! He is very strong willed and any mention of the GP and he kicks off 😬 He's otherwise ok and we're on day 7 of on and off fevers (pretty low-grade) I may give it until Friday maybe and see how he goes obviously if urine is clear!

We've just had the same issue with little ones in the family. Temperature up, snotty nose and red eyes. It passed after a few days of keeping warm, hydrated and resting.

Thank you! He did have a runny nose just over a week ago so maybe it's just a lingering viral as he's otherwise well in himself!
