Baby green mucus and diarrhoea

My baby has had diarrhoea for a week now. It started with an enormous yellow poo last Saturday morning and now it's a week later and he's only had two nappies all week that haven't had poo in them.

Averaging 6-7 dirty nappies a day.

It varies from yellow to green, all wet, and some mucous.

He's just done two today which have no poo whatsoever, just pure green slime!!

Wtf? We were seen by a doctor last Sunday who said all looked fine (temperature etc) and it should be cleared up by the following Friday.

Now it's the following Saturday and there's no improvement.

Has anyone had anything like this? We're going back in at 3 today but I'm worried. I was feeling a bit like an overly neurotic FTM last Sunday but I feel annoyed that we are still in this situation a week later.

Any help/advice gratefully received. He's almost six months and combi fed.

I think you are right to go back to the gp with the red book. I remember my daughter having diarrhoea for a week as a 5 month old and it was awful! I was knackered.

Her weight dropped off and the Dr suggested giving her some formula, which I did.

It’s probably nothing worse than a simple stomach bug but it’s good to be careful around nutrition and hydration and I’m sure all the dirty nappies are driving you insane.

Green poos and slime can be caused by cows milk protein allergy and lactose allergy/ intolerance. Has he recently started having lot of cows milk, as opposed to breast milk or formula?
He might be having problems digesting it if he's suddenly getting more dairy in it's direct form.

Thanks both, yes I'm elbows deep in pooey nappies and he's got bad nappy rash as well which is getting so sore. Am trying to air it out and use barrier cream where I can.

No, he's had no cow's milk, he only has 5 bottles a day, three of which are expressed breast milk and two are formula. Racking my brains as to whether I'm eating anything different but I'm not.

Am religiously sterilising but wondering if I'm not doing a good enough job?! Feel so sorry for him, I hope we can get it sorted asap.

As a pp said, these were some of my daughters symptoms of cows milk allergy, however she sometimes also gets mucasy poo with teething. Does he have any teeth coming through?

hoipolloih · 04/12/2022 10:49

@BabyB2022 Yes, I think he's teething. Why would that cause mucus? X

I think its from all the saliva, but I'm not an expert, just from personal experience with my 2yo.

Justwingingitox · 04/12/2022 11:59

Teething can cause havoc with nappies.
Also potential allergies maybe x

Please I need a baby formula for my nine months old baby who has g6pd. All your suggestions are welcomed. Thanks

Emefa24 · 04/12/2022 17:49

Really. Can you tell me more?

hoipolloih · 08/12/2022 10:22

Just an update in case anyone finds this helpful in future (although this is not confirmed)

We're now day 13 of endless diarrhoea.

This all started after his third set of vaccinations on the Friday morning so I am almost certain they had something to do with it.

I think a reaction has led to temporary lactose intolerance so now we're trying out lactose free formula as well as expressed breast milk. He absolutely hates the lactose free formula so it's heartbreaking trying to feed him but I don't produce enough breast milk to satisfy him.

He's had a poo sample sent for testing but awaiting those results.

He's having about 10 dirty nappies a day. It's really taking its toll on us. Doctors refuse to admit it could be to do with the vaccine but I have read a few similar experiences.

Poor little sausage! I hope you get an answer soon. He must be so uncomfortable.

Lilgamesh2 · 08/12/2022 15:51

We had this once with my DD and it coincided exactly with cold symptoms that I was experiencing. I think my milk was inflaming her someone but she wasn't in discomfort.

Btw all milk including human milk has lactose in it.

Lilgamesh2 · 08/12/2022 15:52

How old is your baby?

Are you eating a lot of a particular food! Cross check your food with the top allergens. Eggs really bothered my baby.

Wingingit1989 · 19/03/2023 20:46

Hi how long did this take to resolve? My baby is experiencing the same thing after 16 week vaccinations. Really appreciate any info x
