Was my baby’s bottle too hot?

She drank it and fell asleep half way through, as she typically does with heated up milk.

if it was too hot, she wouldn’t drink it would she?

How did you heat it up? If it was in the microwave then there can be hot spots. When my now adult children were babies we were taught to test the milk temperature by putting a few drops on the inside of your wrist.

I'm sure if the milk was too hot your baby would have cried.

softpilllow · 30/11/2022 19:51

Why do you think it was too hot?

TheRookie · 30/11/2022 20:15

You would know if it was hot as baby would have been upset surely? What do you think has happened?

Justwingingitox · 30/11/2022 20:18

What makes you think it was too hot?

As first PP said.. I used to put a couple of drops of milk from the bottle on my wrists to make sure it was OK.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 30/11/2022 20:18

Huh? She was probably tired and fell asleep. If the milk was too hot she would be screaming the place down not sleeping.

sasscass · 30/11/2022 20:24

@Justwingingitox @TheRookie @softpilllow @Mamamia7962

I tried it on the back of my hand and it felt hot, it wasn’t boiling of course but it definitely wasn’t warm.

i boil the kettle and leave it to sit for 25 minutes before making up her formula. I didn’t rinse it until the tap this time to cool it down. If I’m not worried about it being too hot for her, I’m worried about the water being too hot and it breaking down the nutrients in her formula.

@sasscass use the inside of your wrist rather than the back of your hand, you won't get as accurate an idea of heat on back of hand

dementedpixie · 30/11/2022 20:27

You're overthinking things. If it was too hot she would have reacted to the temperature of the milk by crying or recoiling from the bottle.

Justwingingitox · 30/11/2022 20:30

After you tried it on your hand, and it felt too hot, you gave it to her? And then she drank it? Did she scream in pain?
If it was too hot she would of let you know one way or another.
I think you're panicking and worrying for nothing, over thinking the whole situation in regards to her bottles. If she was at any point in discomfort.. or unwell, you would know. Same with the nutrients side of things, if she's thriving and growing etc.. you're fine x

softpilllow · 30/11/2022 20:38

I tried it on the back of my hand and it felt hot,

Then it was too hot. Why did you give it to her?

It's not supposed to feel hot or cold and you are supposed to check it in the inside of your wrist.

sasscass · 30/11/2022 21:11

@softpilllow

she drank it though? I would’ve thought she’d reject it if it was too hot.

i was told to use the back of my hand.
I’ll use my wrist from now on.

OP posts:
sasscass · 30/11/2022 21:14

@Justwingingitox no, she just drank it without any fuss and because of the temperature it sent her to sleep for a bit.

im notorious for overthinking lol. We used ready made formula before, I’m new to the powdered formula so I’m only just getting a hang of it

If you're that panicky/stressed get yourself a Tommee Tippee perfect prep!

sasscass · 30/11/2022 21:26

@softpilllow what do you mean?
the other posters here agree that she wouldn’t have taken it if it was too hot.

It's all done now! Don't worry at all.

WineIsMyCarb · 30/11/2022 21:29

One of my babies spat out a bottle and cried/squealed on first sip once, I think he found it too hot. It was inside elbow temp (I always check) but he had just yoghurts, tinned fruit type pudding 10 mins before. So yes, your baby would have recoiled if it had been too hot. She'll be fine. Keep remembering to check and don't worry about it! Flowers

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 30/11/2022 21:29

My baby’s had formula made up from a boiling hot kettle and cooled down for about 10 minutes for the last year and she’s so far doing very well. I’m sure your baby is doing very well too. You don’t need to wind yourself up about all this :-)

Lemonsandlemonade · 30/11/2022 22:03

I wouldn’t worry.

I found making the days bottles first thing or last thing at night annd storing in fridge easiest for convenience and getting up to temperature.

usually getting a cold bottle warm is easier or at least that’s what I found.

Aliaryan · 11/03/2026 08:25

Hello I've been panicking so much all night I don't know what to do. I have a toddler who still drinks formula and I made his formula the other day by letting the boiling water sit in the kettle for 30 mins and then I made it I let it sit in the plastic cup with cold water but it only covered not even half the bottle im so stressed when I first checked the remote it seemed fine but after I gave it to him the bottle was more hot I took it out and was like it's too hot when I checked on the wrist my husband has said no it can't be and it put it back into his mouth I feel awful I can't forgive myself

dementedpixie · 11/03/2026 08:53

@Aliaryan you should start your own thread as this is an old one
Did your child act like it was too hot?
Why don't you give cows milk if he's over 1?
If it was a few days ago why are you still worried about it?

birdling · 06/04/2026 20:47

Surely formula is meant to be made with boiling water and then cooled, so as to kill any bacteria in it.
If the temperature of the water affected the nutrients, then you would not be able to make it safely.

rach2713 · 06/04/2026 22:46

What I use yo do is if my baby was getting 6oz bottle fill it up to 4oz with cool boiled water then when they were ready bolo the kettle and fill the last 2 oz with hot water always worked with all 4 of my children. My 19 year old use to have his bedtime bottle hot like a cup of tea hot don't ask why I never got it but would scream until he got it and still likes a cup of tea before bed lol

MauvePoet · 07/04/2026 17:41

This is my post from a few years ago. I don’t know why I’ve been notified about it. And I’m not sure what my question was even about? it doesn’t make any sense looking back lol. But then again I was a first time mom.
my daughter always drank her bottles hot, if it was too hot then she would’ve cried but the heat sent her to sleep.

softpilllow · 30/11/2022 21:21

Yes, I was serious. This was years ago now and I was a first time mom. She ALWAYS drank her bottles hot. Never did anything to her, she’s still alive and in primary school now 🤦🏻‍♀️
