Hiya im hoping some one can help... my 4 year old banged his ear at school on Friday... the teacher asked if he was OK and he said no but they failed to inform me which ill be addressing tomorrow... however since this happened he's been unable to hear anything out of his left ear. I've been to see a gp who said there's nothing that can be done as he has an ENT appointment on the 10th decenmber and to wait till then and not do anything and the second advice from the walk in center advised us to use nurofen as recommended to help with any inflammation and to keep him of school until his hearing comes back or he's seen the ENT. I'm really unsure what to do for the best I've used the advise and been using nurofen as recommended but do I keep him of school or not as one doctor says yes and the other says no. Thanks for your help its really appreciated in advance also has anyone else been in this situation and the hearing as recovered as I'm obviously concerned for the future.

If he is fine in himself i would give nurofen before school and maybe put a little bit of cotton wool in his ear to pretect it. If it gets worse before his appointment try ringing them for advice and see if they can fit you in sooner..

If I'm being honest I'd keep him off.
I'd definitely be questioning as to why they didn't inform you.. did he not come out with an accident slip? Both schools my children attend come out with a slip and a red or yellow wristband on them to indicate they've had an accident when carrying on the day within school. Obviously if it's severe then we get a phone call. It must of been a pretty hard whack to the ear for him now to not be able to hear out of it, for them reasons alone would be enough to keep him out of school until he can hear properly or be seen at ENT. But that's me, and the school have a duty of care and if they don't stick to that, and you then send him in on medication and the ear gets worse, the medication could mask any potential further issues whilst in school, and you could be completely unaware given they didn't inform you the first time. At home you can monitor on and off properly.
If you're still unsure, you could get a third opinion from a GP. Explain the advice you had RE keeping off school and ask for it in black and white if they were to agree and show it to the school - that way they can't then argue about attendance too. A whack to the ear, hard enough can cause a lot of trouble Xx

Thanks for your replies .... no he never came out with an incident slip or anything ....I was completely unaware ....he said he's told them he's not OK and they've just gone to lunch and not done anything about it... I'm going to keep him of and monitor him I Don't want any further damage.... and I'll be addressing it with school as to why I've not been informed. Thanks you so much for your help .

Yeah that's not OK when it comes to the school side of it. They should of 100% informed you.
Might be worth chasing ENT to see if there's a sooner appt if you explain the situation to them. They can always keep you in mind for cancellations too. I hope he's OK and feels better soon. Keep us updated x

Sandy89xx · 28/11/2022 08:35

I'll definatley keep you updated. Thankyou so much for your help... ive phoned and spoke to the office and there none the wiser about it... I'm waiting for a phone call of his teacher anytime hopefully to see what she says and the office were stunned about it all and have said the head teacher will be involved and she'll also be phoning at some point today and she'll investigate herself .... im really concerned about lasting damage. That's a good idea regarding ENT ill chase them today and see where we stand. Thanks again I really appreciate it x

Of course they're none the wiser about it. Typical!!
Can your son name the teacher that he spoke to and said he wasn't OK to? That will help you in pin pointing who needs chasing up when you speak to the teacher and the head.
Is he in pain at all still? Or just that he can't hear? Is there any weeping of fluids or anything? That's something to keep an eye on. Redness, etc. If there is any of that then I'd advise just take him straight to A&E. I'd also be concerned if my child still couldn't hear the following Monday.. you're doing the right thing in chasing the school and trying to get him seen to earlier imo!
You're more than welcome.
I've recently been in a similiar situation with a school but regarding a gash on my sons eyebrow after being pushed over by another child (which they denied at first!).. I was then told it was a scratch on the phone.. safe to say he needed stitches and it wasn't just a scratch!! X

Oh I'm sorry to hear that. I hope it heals itself and he is on the mend soon. Is he in pain? I cannot believe the school and how they're behaving.
Especially after they haven't informed you and taken the right course of action themselves.
They're probably shi**ing themselves and rightly so. I agree with your friend. Ofsted 100% needs to be made aware of this. I wouldn't let this slide easily. Especially when there's a chance he could have this for life.

Sandy89xx · 08/12/2022 19:22

Hiya thankyou so much for replying ive just read what you wrote previously and wondered how you were getting on regarding your son and the school now and I know it's shocking I can't believe they've admitted it and now are denying it... my little lad called told the office she's a liar and surley they know after she's confessed .... they've reported it on CPOMS apparently and when I asked to look what had been recorded I got told I wasn't allowed and that there's no evidence on there its all my words apparently so I'm trying to actively chase that and see where I stand as as far as I can work out I can make a request to view my sons file but school say I can't so well see.... and he seems fine in himself but everything's got to be turned up louder and constantly using the other side of his ear and asking what they saying and he's shouting when he talks... its awful I can't believe it's all happened and yh well know in 3 months time going forward if his hearing hasn't come back it'll be the op which isn't guaranteed .... its supposed to be really good school but in nursery last year he was stung by a bee and because he never cried they left him and he ended up rushed into hosp with an allergic reaction.... they once let him go in nursery with no parent or adult and he was hiding in the year 6 playground but that was the worst 40 minutes of my life while his teacher tells me not to panic and then the same this year they let him out and when my mum went to pick him up he jumped out of a Bush ... they didn't even know he wasn't in school.... its probs in everyone's best interest to pull him out and not let him back but there SEN has been great for my eldest and he's come on loads
