I’ve never heard any stories of babies having RSV and recovering without hospitalisation.

mine is 4 months old and she has never been sick. I’ve been several places recently where babies and toddlers have been coughing and it sounds awful.

im scared of her getting ill. I’m surprised she hasn’t been sick already considering how many sick people have been around

If they aren't admitted to hospital you most likely won't know that it's RSV because nobody will test. But I'm pretty sure my son had it at 11 months. For many kids it will be a cold or a minor respiratory virus. Some children need hospital supportive care. All you can do is your best

2 of mine had it, despite being very ill at the time they recovered well.. One has a louder cough if he ever gets a cold but is a very sporty teenager who is rarely ill.

My son was unwell at 4m and was tested RSV+ in hospital. He was admitted and treated for about 7 days.
He's 17yrs now, huge and healthy (he smells a bit)
I'd never heard of rsv till then.

You wouldn't hear of them because you wouldn't know, they'd only be tested in hospital.

My DS2 who's 21 now was an inpatient with RSV bronchiolitis for 5 days at 9 weeks. You wouldn't know it was RSV unless they're admitted - it just presents as a cold, so for lots of babies and older children, it's just a blocked up nose and cough. My older son, who was 3 at the time, passed it on and he wasn't especially unwell. DS2 did have quite serious viral wheeze (a couple of further hospital admissions before his second birthday) until he was about 3 but has had no asthma or respiratory problems since. He hasn't even ever had Covid!

My DS had it at 5 months emergency admittance to hospital. Was intubated on dat 2 and we were told to prepare for the worst but he recovered and we were in hospital for 3 weeks. Now 12 years old and debriefing me on how unfair exams are, before going off to play tennis. (Not in UK)

Is it not one that most children get at some point but you don't know about it unless it's serious? Bit like scarlet fever.

Managinggenzoclock · 23/11/2022 17:33

Mine had it and was hospitalised and really very poorly but he bounced back quickly too and is now a very healthy, happy 7 year old.

FreestyleVibe · 23/11/2022 20:07

Mine had it at 2 months old. We went to hospital to get her checked but she didn't need further help so we were discharged (after they did an industrial aspiration of all her snot which was very satisfying!).

The doctor and nurses were impressed that she was such a strong little girl! They told us what to look out for and to come back if needed but we didn't need to.

RSV is a very common virus. Mostly, you don’t know a child has RSV because they have mild symptoms and recover. The only reason that all the children you know with RSV end up in hospital is because hospital is the only place that tests for RSV.

WaddleAway · 01/12/2022 15:40

Urgh just saw that this is an old thread resurrected by a journalist. Ignore my response.

VikingsandDragons · 04/12/2022 22:03

Really really common virus, one of our children has a very severe respiratory condition and was vaccinated to provide RSV protection until she was 2, however we were told 98% of kids have had it by 2, it's behind most sniffles and coughs but for most healthy children it won't be any bother.
