How can I help my 1yo?

She's had a bad cold for a week, only had a temperature on the first night, since then just cough and runny nose.

But the runny nose is next level, just so thick and green, I would have expected it to be clear coloured by now.

She wakes up with thick green crusts all around her face, I clean as gently as I can but it's still so sore for her. Some bits around her nose are a bit weepy/slightly bleeding.

When cleaning her nose hurts, she can't even cry because her voice is gone. She'll do a quiet whimper with a broken voice.

I know it's not worth going to the GP for a cold but feel so bad that I'm not doing anything! What can I do?

My first never used to have a cold for more than a day or two, so this is new to me

Just go to gp
That s what gp is for
She is a baby and you worried
Gp Can advise or prescribe a cream for face
The Lost voice is concerning. Not normal.
Needs full e n t check ear nose throat by gp

At least take her to a pharmacist or health visitor

Given that she doesn't have a high temperature lingering I wouldn't say she needs to see the GP as such.
All 3 of my DC have had this rotten cough cold for about 3 weeks now. And my youngest is still on/off with a slight temperature that I'm able to manage with fluids and medicine when needed and a rotten nose and cold.
Try a warm bath with some vapour bubble bath (asda little angels) works well if you're in the UK. Clean her as much as you can without making her too sore around the nose, and then whack some original vaseline around the nose so it's not going to sit and crust so much (hopefully).. it should act like a barrier type thing. Also have you tried a nasal spray? They do a calpol saline one I think it is, which I have used for my boys for years.
I hope she begins to feel better soon. Xx

Also I swear by cool mist humidifiers on near them at night time when they're poorly. Or even when I'm poorly xx

Thank you. I have called the GP 3 times today and hung up before it was my turn in the queue as I thought maybe it wasn't needed. Can't make up my mind!

I just know they'll ask if she has a fever (she doesn't), if she's eating OK (she is), seems happy and energetic (she does), seems in pain (she doesn't, unless she's crying and her throat gets sore).

I think I'll give it a couple more days using some of the tips here, will pop to the pharmacy to get some bits. If by Friday it's still the same I might take her to GP before the weekend.

For the sire nose I use lanolin nipple cream on both me and dc. It goes on easily, leaves a barrier for hours and most importantly doesn't sting.

A nasal aspirator is also disgusting but works very well.

*sore nose

Tal12 · 23/11/2022 12:51

the Kit and Kin magic salve is absolutely amazing stuff. I use it on my 1 and 3 year old when they have a cold and since using neither of their noses have been sore. Before my poor 1 year old had such a bad cold his nose started to scab! It’s a really great barrier and soothes sore skin for the inevitable colds. Can buy it on John Lewis

BeastOfBODMAS · 23/11/2022 12:51

Mine has a similar cold and to get the nose crust off I’m using reusable wipes that have been tumble dried really soft with a little warm water. Then Vaseline as pp. No soreness so far.

BeastOfBODMAS · 23/11/2022 12:52

Oh and Vicks to reduce the snottiness in the first place

FrictionDiction · 23/11/2022 13:09

I second humidifier! I have a vicks one that really helps

The chemist can advise you if you feel that GP isn't needed

FreestyleVibe · 23/11/2022 22:01

Thank you, I went to the pharmacy and as I came home nursery rang to say she was looking really washed out, was just curled up in the corner not doing much and was struggling to drink. Anytime she drank it made her cough and milk was coming out through her nose bless her.

I was able to see the GP who checked her over and said it's most likely bronchitis (she had bronchiolitis as a baby so I guess this stuff affects her more than normal).

He was on the fence whether she needed antibiotics so he prescribed them but said to watch and wait for a couple of days. She had perked up this evening after some calpol so fingers crossed. I used saline spray and vaseline before bed, so hopefully she wakes up looking slightly less like a green crusty monster in the morning.

I'm going to sleep next to her as her voice is completely gone, there's no way I'll hear her cry if I'm in another room.

Thanks all for the advice!
