Newborn’s spine, is this normal?

I can feel the base of newborns spine and towards the top of the back, but can’t see or feel the part in the middle? I am worried as DP handed her to me quite roughly recently, sort of pushed her into my arms in a rush and I am worried it’s pushed the spine in.

I'm pretty sure your baby's spine is ok. Their bones are made of rubber at this age and they are bouncier than you'd think!

Have you posted before ?

I think your anxiety is getting the better of you. To put your mind at rest, please speak to your health visitor or GP.

AnyFucker · 22/11/2022 19:01

And it’s not possible to “push a baby’s spine in”.

Justwingingitox · 22/11/2022 19:13

If a baby's spine was pushed in, which I'm pretty sure it can't be "pushed in" your baby would be in a lot of discomfort and distress.
I'm sure baby is absolutely fine.

@AnyFucker i have anxiety, just didn’t expect to feel so anxious with the baby. I will definitely be booking a GP appointment tomorrow.

@Justwingingitox thanks. I don’t think they were in discomfort, they seem fine now and usual sleeping and eating. Never thought I would be so overwhelmed with worry!

It’s a scary time, for sure. But what you are worrying about does not make sense. Tell your GP how you are feeling, they can help you.

I’m sure they are fine, I don’t think a spine can be pushed in!
I completely get where you’re coming from though, when my first was a couple of weeks old I picked him up and didn’t manage to support his head properly and it flopped back for a second and I was convinced I had given him permament neurological damage!
(he is absolutely fine btw!)😁

Don't stress yourself unnecessarily. If a baby was hurt like that, you'd know about it one way or another.
Please seek help re your anxiety.
It's so easy to think or panic something is wrong with our children with the slightest mark, wound, sniffle, cough, or you think you feel something odd but it's not odd at all.. But in reality, 99% of the time it's just the mum in us being over dramatic and causing ourselves unnecessary stress and worry. Xx

itsgettingweird · 22/11/2022 19:20

I think seeing the GP is a good move or a HV if you have one?

Being a new mum is an anxious time but if it's overwhelming you they can help.

And spines can be like that naturally. Mine still is now at 42!!! I'm perfectly healthy.

PritiPatelsMaker · 22/11/2022 19:25

I agree with the PP, if your LO was in any discomfort they'd definitely let you know. As they've had their milk and are now sleeping it sounds as though they're fine.

You however might need a bit of additional support to help you with this anxiety. Please have a look at the PANDAS Foundation and think about giving them a call whilst the baby is asleep Flowers

Betipp · 22/11/2022 19:59

Thank you for the support, I know on some level they’ve let me know if they were in pain. I just worry so much I’ve done damage. I have moments I feel more rational but because they obviously can’t speak I feel helpless to be sure they’re ok.

They might not be able to speak but babies have a very good ability to let you know when things are wrong and get attention. Hungry, they cry, tired, they cry, in pain, they cry, uncomfortable, they cry.

If your baby is fed and asleep they definitely don't have a problem Flowers
