Breast milk newborn

Hi all,
my 2 weeks daughter is spilling up quite a bit of food after eating and I had a suspicion that it could be related to my breast milk. I have switched to formula for a few days and noticed that she isn’t as grumpy and is not spilling up nowhere close compared to what she did when she was feeding my breast milk. Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this even be true that my breast milk would make her sick and formula not so much?? I have a healthy diet..

Unlikely. Could be her latch, maybe she’s swallowing less air when feeding from a bottle. Have you expressed and fed from a bottle? 2 weeks is so young, mine was 10 days old before he even managed to latch at all. They’re still getting the hang of it. I did combi feeding, there was a lot of spitting up either way to be honest. It’s very normal, their digestive system is so new and not very developed. Infacol helped.

Really unlikely when breast milk is absolutely designed for human babies and formula is modified cow's milk. Spitting up is very common in small babies. Lots of info/ tips here

Thanks! I did a typo in my message - she is 3 weeks old not 2.. But still as you say really young. Yes, I have also tried using a bottle with expressed milk and the outcome is the same really. Formula just seems to help her settle better. I am doing a 72 hour test where I give only one or another and see if there is a difference. I am also giving Infacol so fingers crossed. I would def prefer natural breast milk over anything say!

Thanks! That’s a really good article. It does seem to indicate that breast milk should be much better than formula but I just don’t get it why after my milk she seems to be so much worse. I will continue trying though 🤞

Family member in similar situation reckoned it was linked to her diet. When she was on a very plain no caffeine diet baby was fine. But when she had coffee, spicy or fatty food it seemed to impact.

I was just about to say the same thing! Mothers diet can play a part - when I had my DS he would do the same - I switched from cows milk to soya milk and he settled. Congratulations on your new born - enjoy!

I will def give it a shot!! It’s ironic as a new parent you need all the caffeine you can get to keep you going 🙈

Breast milk it's self shouldn't make your baby sick. It might be worth considering the position your breastfeeding in vs the position you feed a bottle in. Some babies are less likely to posset if they are breastfed in a more upright position. Have a look at the koala hold for newborns. Perhaps keep baby upright for a little while after the feed too.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/breastfeeding-and-lifestyle/diet/ this gives you some information on diet and caffein intake.

Sorry to have been the bad news bearer. I formula feed and literally consumed coffee morning, noon and night.

I am sure someone who has BF can advise a caffeine alternative, as you said it is a time when sleep can be an issue.

Best of luck
