DS cough driving me mad!

Any remedies for a cough that's constant? It's just on and on and on and I know he can't help it bless him but it's driving me mad (in the nicest way possible)
He's also getting upset with it because he wants it to go. Just want to help him ease it off.
What's your go to for a child's cough? Need a miracle or something here lol
DS is 10 just incase it's relevant

Did he have a cold and as a result has a lasting cough?

My Ds was 7 when he had a cough that wouldn't go, especially at night. It was allergic asthma (dust mites).
Ask your pharmacist for advice 💐

My eldest DS has one of those coughs at the moment 🙃 cool mist humidifier at night. Vicks on the bottom of the feet at night with socks on always works a treat for us too x

RandomMess · 16/11/2022 20:47

Appropriate cough medicine?

I will have to invest in a humidifier. I've tried the Vicks on the feet and socks before but it didn't do much

Appropriate cough medicine?

Oh wow! Don't think I thought of that lol

All honesty though I've tried loads of different ones suitable to his age

Yes he's been poorly. Like a mixture of a sickness bug and a cold. Whatever it was has left with with a dry ass cough.

Is he worse at night when he's in bed? If so, try raising the head end of his bed up a bit, or give him a couple of extra pillows to raise his head up higher than his waist - it isn't the most restful sleeping on a pile of pillows, but a lot better than constantly coughing.

During the day, frequent sips of water. Would he be responsible enough to take cough sweets in to school? I use them a lot but otherwise eat very few sweets or added sugar. Lockets/tunes basically got me through hayfever season when I was younger, as I'm asthmatic & it was a nightmare, especially when I also had exams.

I actually would approach your GP. A constant cough can and often is caused by undiagnosed asthma.

LargeglassofRosePlease · 16/11/2022 21:23

Sounds like possible covid to me. What with the sickness too. Poor thing. Speak to the GP. That’s what I’d do.

RandomMess · 16/11/2022 21:23

I had a cough for over 3 months before Covid took FOREVER to go.

Is it a dry or productive cough?

Mine seemed dry then eventually would produce this tiny bit of infected gunk 🙄 I took the nastiest tasting cough medicine in existence as nothing else helped.

Pixiedust1234 · 16/11/2022 21:29

You say he's had a cold. Is he still snotty and/or catarrh? That can produce nasal drip rather than having a tickly cough. Is he coughing up phlem? Can't offer help until you can say more (and I've had that cough for 5 weeks, it really is awful).

At miminum I have found sipping cold water at the beginning of a coughing fit reduces it a lot.

My daughter has asthma and has just had an awful cough which is taking ages to go.
Vicks on feet and humidifier in her bedroom has helped. But as she has mild asthma too, we have had to use her ventolin pump. Her asthma is really mild and only affects her badly with colds so if he's like this regularly it would be worth getting checked out for asthma.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 16/11/2022 21:33

When my dc have cough, I encourage him to wear a mask. It keeps airway moist, reduces the dry cough. Always worked, even before covid.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 16/11/2022 21:40

And it worked particularly well at night when my ds went to sleep with cough. I was doing this since he was a toddler, way back before mask wearing related to covid.
I used to work for airline, and one thing we all did was wear a mask in flight when we rest. It doesn't stop you breathe, it helps you keep your throat from drying.

No it's literally just a dry cough, no mucus or anything. It's only been since the weekend and it's no different whether it's at night or during the day. Defo not covid as I've been testing him and all negative

I agree with the possible asthma diagnosis. My son had a formal diagnosis made in the summer after struggling with a cough for what felt like months. He’s been started on a steroid inhaler now and his symptoms improved almost instantly. His wasn’t helped by hay fever/ allergies either.
