Can children get headaches?

5.5 year old has said a couple of times during the last week when he was at school his 'head hurt' during the day spontaneously and not constant.
Is it normal for children to get the odd headache? It's been a few days he's come home and said it.
It's just strange hearing a child say they've got a headache so I'm just wondering if they can get them just like us adults do and it be nothing to worry about.
Thanks

My DS had constant headaches. He had an MRI and turned out to be chronic sinusitis caused by Hayfever

Of course they can get headaches. In my experience they are mostly caused by dehydration so always get DC drink water before resorting to any pain killers.
Does your DC drink enough?

It's not at all unusual, I used to have them sometimes as a child and so did my son. Children become tense sometimes, also exposure to sun or extreme cold, some activities and certain things they eat can cause headaches. They usually go fairly soon. Obviously if they have a cold or other virus which raises temperature their head will hurt.

Yes, mine gets headaches. She also has a few kids in her class who get migraines. I would suggest an eye test and encouragement to drink lots of water

My dc had odd headaches. It was most likely caused by dehydration, he didn't like drinking water and school only allowed water. But when he complained of headaches, we told him he had to drink water, and he started drinking. He hasn't complained since.

One of my 10 year old does (I have twins), he's he lots of eye appointments and drinks a lot and GP just said that his Dad gets migraines so he's likely prone. On a side note I thought it was weird the GP would say to me about my husbands health condition without him present or that he would know that. Maybe the system shows family history ?

So yes be gets pretty frequent headaches.

Ooh a lot of dehydration comments, interesting as he never finished his bottle of drink while at school.

My DD has had headaches since she was about 2. She used to describe it as a "bobbly / tingly" feeling, and, as she got older, she would say "it hurts here / there" etc. She was referred to a paediatrician as she would have random headaches, but basically lots of children get headaches and some get them more often than others. My DD can go months and months without one, and then have a spate of them. I was advised that she has simple headaches and to give her calpol as and when needed. She often gets them before symptoms of a cold appear (i.e. a stuffy nose).

@Irishflower only worry if they are constant / more severe, waking her up and are accompanied by nausea / sickness.

I suffered from childhood migraines it was awful but Most of the time With children it’s down to tiredness or dehydration I’d imagine

My 2 youngest sons have headaches. My 12 year old has been diagnosed with migraine - he used to vomit, etc was horrendous for him he’s on meds daily for this now, but started 4/5 years old. Had eye tests fine then needed glasses at 10. Younger son just gets random headaches.

My 2 both had headache as the only sign of covid. Otherwise fine, one said they felt dizzy too but it passed off in a few days
