Private health insurance for children

Does anyone choose to pay for this? My job comes with private health for me and I’m thinking about paying for cover for my children but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. And if it’s worth it, what insurers are recommended?

Our children are covered on our policy and we’ve been so thankful for it. My daughter has recurring issues with her ears and when it first started we were able to get in with private consultant same day rather than A&E, brilliant service and aftercare. Well worth it

I’ve been very thankful to have DD covered! I couldn’t get her added on to my work policy so just had to insure her separately through Bupa. Not sure I’d choose to use them again (they can be a bit more complicated than other insurers and massive waits to get through on the phone) but we’ve had to use it quite a lot over the past few years and it’s done the job. With the way the NHS is at the minute having the knowledge that if needed we have easy, quick access to consultants, diagnostics etc is so reassuring.

Mine are covered. There are some shit exclusions around anything with the slightest whiff of developmental delay, ASD etc. But so far they’ve used it for one of them who has had loads of ENT issues, one with plantar fasciitis, one with a squint, and a lot of private dentistry.

Oh yeah there’s a 24 hour GP thing too. I wouldn’t be without it for any of us.

Loungingstevens · 22/11/2022 23:27

Invaluable for us. My work
paynfor me and I pay £90 a month for the others. Yes, when my son cut his head I had to go to a&e. Anything emergency like that, then the nhs works. For every other thing I’ve gone private. If my children need seeing to, then I get anxious waiting. I live in London. I sometimes manage to sort appointments with specialist same day or next day and find that invaluable.
its through my work so they have a contract with AXA. They have been amazing and gave him access to things post miscarriage I wasn’t ‘entitled’ to.

Oh and the 24hr GP that I can use off my phone anywhere in the world

Yes, through work ( although have to pay to add them) though about to use it for the first time for DD's autism diagnosis. We actually have a choice between BUPA and WPA as DH and I can both get it through work, does anyone know if one is better than the other or should we just plump for the cheapest.

We used our private health cover lots for our DS’ ENT, Dermatologist, Paediatric Gastroenterologist, Neurologist & MRI. Worth every penny.

clipclop5 · 23/11/2022 22:55

@Jules912 I have Bupa for DD and personally wouldn’t recommend them - customer service isn’t good, often it’s a half hour wait to get through and in general the claims process is quite complicated compared to other insurers. Last year it took an entire month to get a claim approved and it took a mountain of paperwork. Theyve done the job and so far have covered everything we’ve needed but I don’t think I’d choose them again.

thaegumathteth · 23/11/2022 23:07

Ours have it but the only two times we've tried to use it it was no use (scan on potential cancerous lump (it wasn't) and treatment for soft tissue injury).

However, I'm not sure tbh that we use it to it's full potential. It's been invaluable for me so I suspect if they had a big issue we'd be grateful of it.

minipie · 23/11/2022 23:13

Yes ours are included on the work policy. We’ve used it FAR more for the DC than for us.

Both DC have had serious medical conditions which the NHS would not have diagnosed (DD1) or treated (DD2). It has made a huge difference.

Interesting to see the PP saying it covers private dental - I wouldn’t have expected it to! Will have to check if ours does.
