Blood in baby's poo

I have called the GP and am waiting for a call back from a Dr, just wanted to ask on here in the meantime.

DD2 is 6 months and when I changed a poo-y nappy just now there was fresh red blood on the wipes. Not loads, but some on every wipe. She's generally well, no previous signs of allergies (although there are allergies in the family, DH has an anaphylactic allergy), and no mucus or anything in her poo.

We've recently (in the last week) started weaning her onto some solids, mainly just some purées, some homemade pasta sauce, and she's gnawed on some fingers of toast etc. Other than that she's exclusively breastfed. Obviously this has made her poo a bit more solid than the standard breastfed poo, but nothing too hard.

I'm wondering about maybe a fissure? Can babies get those? She didn't seem upset when actually pooing though so I don't think it can have been painful.

Anyone else had a baby with this?

If it's fresh red blood, then it's usually nothing to worry about, possibly a little tear in the skin if the poo has been hard or something has been scratchy coming out.

With weaning you can also get bits of food coming through undigested which might be different colours and can be alarming if you're not expecting it.

You've done the right thing in contacting the GP but don't worry :)

Is it definitely blood and not tomato sauce? Babies don’t digest very well at first and what comes out can often look very similar to what goes in.

Glad you’re seeking medical advice, it’s just good to consider all possibilities.

Definitely blood rather than tomato.

Since I posted she's done another poo and there was blood again and this time it definitely caused her pain. She also seemed in pain when being wiped so I think it probably is a little tear.

I'll ask the dr but I think maybe stop her solids until it's resolved, so her poo can be softer? She's not actually eating that much anyway since we've only just started, but it's enough to have made her poo less runny (sorry, a lot of poo talk!)

How much are you giving her to eat OP?
My dd recently began weaning dc and was surprised when I told her to only give 3 little teaspoons initially and increase really slowly.
Babies tummies are tiny.
Also dc needs cooled boiled water too.

Sorry if you already knew this.

It is probably a little fissure or tear. I remember when my son was about 6, he wiped and had loads of blood (well I thought it was!) and went straight into panic mode. Rushed him to the GP and it was an anal fissure!
It's very likely, especially as her diet has changed. Don't worry!

@Fireballxl5 I don't think we're giving too much but of course we can reduce it. Because of DH's allergies we were advised to introduce allergens one at a time and not give too much. DD1 also vomited whenever she had egg when first weaned (she's grown out of that now) so we're doing it fairly slowly.
