Unusual Bruising?

Wondering if anyone can shed some light on whether or not this is a concern or has experienced something similar perhaps.

3 weeks ago, my 2 year old hit her chin on a step - it left quite a nasty graze and bruising but nothing that concerned me, just normal toddler injuries! Two days ago I noticed that the bruising had pretty much gone (it went through the normal colours/stages that I expect) but a hard lump was visible. Tonight before putting her to bed, I noticed that the bruise has reappeared, it’s purple/black and over the top of the lump so in the exact same place.

Basically, what am I asking is, do bruises ever almost completely vanish and then turn black/purple or is this something I should be going to the GP with?

I would

Given it happened 2 weeks ago, bruising disappeared then has come back.. I would be getting this checked.
Had she bumped it again since?

3 weeks ago, sorry x

My DS bumped his cheek and a lump formed underneath - it was nothing to worry about and it did go away eventually, but it did take about 2 months! It was just a haematoma, and it didn't bother my son, although it was quite noticeable! I personally wouldn't see a GP - speak to your pharmacist if you need to but give it a couple more weeks and it should go down / disappear

Thanks all. She’s not bumped it again that I’m aware of and it really is v purple/black so feel I’d have noticed it happen iyswim. I’ll keep an eye on it, she doesn’t seem in any pain and is her usual self!

I'd say it's effectively two layers of injury- the initial superficial bruising, which is resolved, and a deeper bruise that's now coming out.

A very very similar thing happened to my DC. We monitored it for a few weeks and it didn’t get better so went to the GP and she was referred to a paediatric dermatologist on a 2 week wait urgent referral, which was obviously very worrying.
The dermatologist looked at it under a specialist microscope and has taken some medical photographs, and we will be going back in January to check up on it. They don’t think it’s anything sinister but it may have to be surgically removed at some point.
Id see a GP.

Ah I hadn’t even thought of this being a possibility but it would make sense I suppose. It’s even darker today and worse than the original bruise.

Thank you for this, it’s helpful to know that other people have experienced similar and what the pathway was. I think I’ll do a watchful wait over the next week and if still there, I will give the GP a call.
