Streptococcus 3 weeks old

Out daughter is in hospital at the moment at 3 weeks old. Brought her in on Monday afternoon as worried she was lethargic, not really feeding and breathing a bit laboured on an exhale.

The blood culture tests have come back today to show streptococcus - the treatment is to stay on the antibiotics she'd already started and she's currently on oxygen as well to help with saturation levels which had started to drop.

Everything I've googled (I know, I know I shouldn't) is about the dangers of Strep B in newborns fresh out into the world. I wondered if anyone had any experience with a baby who's been in the world for a few short weeks already? Are there any questions I should be asking? Anything we should be looking out for?

She's breastfeeding, was born at 37 weeks (spontaneous labour, vaginal birth, waters broke 2 hours before she arrived, strep was not picked up on me at all)

I cant comment on late onset GBS experience (my DD spent 2 weeks in NICU with GBS sepsis as a newborn) but worth giving this charity a ring - gbss.org.uk They are the only GBS charity i could find and have tonnes of useful info, including a helpline.

Wishing you and her all the very best. It's so horrible. Hope's she makes a speedy recovery! Flowers

Oh OP. This is why we need to spread the word far and wide about pre-natal GBS testing - women MUST be given all the information they need to be able to make an informed choice whether to test or not.

I have no personal experience of GBS infection but I was positive in both pregnancies and had the antibiotics in labour.

Id say if your little one is a few weeks old and breastfed hopefully her immunity will be a bit better compared to a newborn. Sending a massive hug and handhold. Babies are strong, and from your post it seems like it’s been picked up at a relatively early stage. You’re both in my thoughts tonight xx
