13 year old shaking hand

Just to preface that I am planning on calling the GP tomorrow but just wanted to hear if anyone had experienced similar or if it’s an over reaction to call the GP even?

DS is 13. On Sunday we were playing badminton which is a normal activity for us. He complained of a sudden headache about halfway through. Had a drink and sat down for a few minutes then was happy to join in with us again.

An hour later we were eating lunch and I looked over at him and he was pretty pale and his right hand was really shaking. He said his head hurt again and he felt sick. He didn’t feel cold but his hand wouldn’t stop shaking.

I gave him paracetamol and he laid down to rest. He has had a couple of migraines before so I thought it was that. It seemed to pass and a couple of hours later he was eating me out of house and home as normal and said all was fine. This is normal for his migraines. Sudden pain / sickness that he can sleep off and bounce back from.

Today he has come home from school saying his hand keeps going weird and shaking. No headache or sickness. He said his hand was cold and looked blotchy but doesn’t hurt. It’s happened twice since he got home. Passes after about 5 minutes. He doesn’t feel lightheaded or anything else.

Does this just sound like a trapped nerve type thing? Rather then blood sugars or a migraine? Wouldn’t a nerve thing be sore?

I do want to call the GP in the morning but I know it’s a fight to get seen and I wonder if they will think this is a blinkers thing to go to the GP about.

@SunshineBoy any feedback from the scan? How is your DS doing now?

Jaybird43 · 27/11/2022 19:48

Hope everything went well yesterday @SunshineBoy x

@SunshineBoy hope all is ok. xx

@SunshineBoy hope all is ok with your DS - hoping you got good news following the scan x

Thanks for checking in on us.

MRI went well. DS stayed still beautifully despite apparently being the most boring thing he’d ever done - even counting school assemblies!

I rang the day unit and the doctor on duty was kind enough to let me know the summary said all was normal. We have been referred to a paediatric consultant though because he is still getting the tremor daily. They should see us in the new year. We have instructions to go straight to A&E still if it’s prolonged or he gets significant head pain or dizziness and vision issues.

we have done Christmassy family stuff this week and I’m reassured he seems to be himself. He is often saying he is tired still but he’s pretty much back to himself.

Oh that’s great news. Hoping tests come back clear, the doctors scratch their heads and the symptoms go and become ‘one of those things’. Enjoy Christmas!

I'm really glad to see that all ok with MRI. Hope you get some answers soon.

@SunshineBoy hi what was the outcome as my son is experiencing headaches with shaky hands?

DS still has the tremor. We saw the consultant and he has some right sided weakness. We’ve been given a few months to try muscle building to see if that changes anything and if not he will get an MRI on his shoulder / spine. He was sure it was muscular or skeletal in nature.

the headaches he felt were cluster type and could be caused by neck or shoulder tension.

definitely push to be seen properly. They said to us that if it were both hands shaking together they’d be looking more at blood sugars etc

@SunshineBoy thanks vety much for your response - I have a doctors appointment next week.

I hope you get things sorted!

Cuppasoupmonster · 08/02/2023 21:50

Great that they’ve ruled out anything brain related as that seemed the primary concern. Hope you get answers soon xx

@SunshineBoy just wondered if your son had a covid vaccine? My son has been unwell since his vaccine last year including migraines, shaky hand, shaky foot and severe fatigue. Not getting much joy from the doctors at the moment.
