Is this appendicitis?

Hello all, I am feeling pretty worried at the moment as I don't feel like medical professionals are listening to me so I thought I would get some perspective you MN.

My DD is nearly 4 (in Jan). She has been complaining for 2 days of tummy ache. Had a dramatically reduced appetite...couple of bites here and there. temperature of around 39 and complains her tummy it is painful when she lays on her back.

This morning she started to cry saying her tummy was really hurting. I gave her calpol and 30 minutes later she said she felt better but kept pointing to the right side of her belly button telling me it still hurt.

I called the GP - was told by the receptionist that if it was appendicitis, she wouldn't get any relief when given medication and it wouldn't go on for days. I am not sure how true this is. I pushed for an appointment but was told that if I was worried, I should take her to a walk-in clinic.

Called the clinic and they tell me they only have nurses working today and that if they triage her and she needs to see a doctor that I would have to take her to another facility.

My DD is so sad, she is watching Disney on the tab whilst laid in bed and I don't know what to do. I am an older mum with another daughter who is 8 and usually I am chilled, but something doesn't seem right.

What can I do?

Glad to hear she's stable now OP. The kidney issues would tie in with the suspected UTI. Are they going to scan her kidneys to check what's going on?

Pashazade · 08/11/2022 15:48

Very glad it wasn't appendicitis. Hope she recovers quickly!

Goodness, thanks for making this thread OP.
It really just goes to show we really should trust our instincts.

Hope your little bubba gets well soon x

How are things going today OP?

FruitTwistandShake · 09/11/2022 14:40

Hi all, thanks again for all the kind messages. We are home finally after 2 long nights and my DD is feeling a lot better. They suspected a kidney infection and as she did not respond as well to the Anti-Bs as they hoped they are pretty sure it was viral. They kept her in again last night as her temperature went up to over 40 again and she hadn't sustained any long periods of wellness until the early hours of this morning when everything calmed down again. She only ate toast yesterday morning and then nothing else except water. But today she has already eaten more than her dad which is saying something.

I have to go back to the DP with her tomorrow and provide a urine sample to be sent off to the lab but I also have a meeting with the practice manager to discuss the receptionist.

The receptionist with her ‘overanxious new mum’ comment could have delayed you seeking treatment and given DD was admitted to hospital was potentially dangerous advice. Definitely complain, imagine you had been a young new mum, could have been awful.

FruitTwistandShake · 09/11/2022 15:30

@noblegiraffe this exactly!!!

I was still classed as an older mum when I had my first DD but was constantly made to feel that I was neurotic when I was going through the process of getting her many allergies diagnosed. I even had one professional tell me that my DD did not have eczema because that person was not used to how it presented in mixed race skin. I cannot imagine how many mums and dads are fobbed off when they raise concerns. It is horrendous.

I hate the 'over anxious' mum thing. Drives me insane.
When DD was 6 months old, about 4am she woke up crying. Babies cry, no big deal. But after 10 mins something in me said she was ill. I called 111. They said she had no symptoms apart from crying, she even asked if I had PND. (Which I did) so she said that a baby crying is normal. I explained to her that it didn't feel normal. She then asked me to get myself a GP appointment to reassess my PND. I agreed with her. By 7am I decided that the lady on phone had got it wrong and I again went with my gut. I took DD to the walk in centre.

At the walk in centre, after explaining that there was something wrong with my baby, I was told to sit and wait until emergencies were seen. I thought that was reasonable. 30 mins waiting time DD developed a temp. Receptionist said and I quote 'well you would get warm if you were crying for almost 5 hours'
1.5 hours of waiting I changed my babies nappy and saw purple rash. Dr came checked her over and I was immediately rushed to hospital with her...with the apology of the receptionist.

Arrived at hospital, DD had a lumber puncture, and treatment for meningitis.

Thankfully, it was not meningitis even though the rash was not blanching. But we were in hospital for 8 days while the Drs were struggling to get her temp below 40.

She was fine in the end, she has something that stops her being able to regulate her temp when she is ill, so any temp she gets is always over 40...even if slightly poorly.
But I will never forget how I was made to feel like an over anxious mum.

To this day, both DP and I can tell when my daughter is going to get poorly at least a day before any symptoms. We can't do this for DD1 or DD3.

My point is, a mother should never be made to feel over anxious. It could cost a life!

@FruitTwistandShake I'm so glad she's OK and on the mend slowly. Well done mumma 🥰 I hope the urine tests from the lab come back "normal". Xx
