Just thought id throw this out there to see if anyone has experienced it - whilst understanding not all of you are medical professionals 😊
So my DS is 7 years old.
He has previously had what seems to be like petechiae twice within the last 4 or so months on both shoulders at the same time, lasting around a week, and at both times I have put it down to having a viral bug going about as my elder son and younger son had both had bugs going around at these times also.
More recently he's developed like a single cough, which he does now and again throughout the day, mainly when hes up and about and doing things. But not at all at night when he's sleeping. His fluid intake has increased a lot.. we can't even walk down the street for 2 minutes without him needing water, he drinks lots of it. This is also all he will drink, apart from the occasional chocolate milk - though I'm not complaining, he doesn't like fizzy, squash, juice, nothing. This morning walking to school (school is less than 5 minute walk) he had finished his water bottle.
I've also noticed he is taking frequent toilet trips, and we thought it was out of habit, he says he needs a wee all the time, but I've stood there with him and sometimes it's only a trickle. He's doing this around every 30 mins to an hour. He's been complaining of shin pain on and off in 1 leg.
It's a ball ache to get into the doctors and I've called 288 times this morning to try and get him seen to, to be told they've got a 5 minute slot at 12pm to which I've taken, when they asked what was wrong I said I don't know, possible urine infection but could be something completely different, hence why I want him seen.
I just wondered if any medical pros are here, or if anyone has similar experiences with a child of theirs and what the cause was or is?! He hasn't been spiking any temps, no loss of appetite or anything. He does seem tired more often than not at the moment also. TIA x

The thirst, frequent toilet trips and tiredness could indicate urine infection, but are also red flags for diabetes. So getting him checked up the right thing to do!
Regarding the rash, could it be from the shoulder straps of a backpack? Cough might be a wee cold and leg pain growing pains. So these wouldn't worry me too much, but you can mention them with the gp. Good luck and I hope it's nothing to worry about.

@Adeleex your son sounds just like mine! In my son's case, his petechial rashes weren't linked to urinary issues (he would have the rashes if he had a bug or if he had any pressure on his skin). I remember once he had a petechial rash all the way from his chin down to his groin and there was no physical way that could've happened, but ED thought it was just something he gets every now and then. We have had copious blood tests for these rashes as my son also has VERY prominent lymph nodes, which always raised alarms for leukaemia (it never was). Has your son had a blood test recently? Your story to me sounded like ?diabetes?

With regards to the weeing - my son is under urology and they said that he goes so often (around 16 times a day) because his bladder cannot tolerate urine, so it tries to void when he has any liquid in his bladder. We had to do bladder training ("one, two, three, do I need a wee" - just to get the child to really think if they need a wee or can hold on for longer periods). He is now on medication to help with bladder control.

I would definitely speak to your GP about both the excessive drinking and the rashes and just have a blood test to make sure all is ok.

Thank you both for your replies.
We have seen the GP who has tested his urine for diabetes and UTI and she said everything seems clear there.
We have another appt booked for Thursday morning to discuss the cough as she is querying asthma for this.

The thirst and constant urinating is still on going. 🙄
That is very interesting though @Jaybird43. It got to the point last night where I did sit him down and say look, it's really not good for you to be going to the toilet every half an hour-40 mins, and you must only go when you feel you need a wee, but he turned around and said he always feels like he needs to wee, but it can be the smallest couple of drips.
Yesterday we established he went to the toilet 13 times in a day. 6 of those were at school. I honestly feel like it's a case of how you're dealing with it.. getting him to think about if he REALLY needs a wee or not. I'm at my wits end with it. I don't know what to do.

Regarding the rashes, it's very bizarre. I did mention this to the GP but she didn't seem fazed as he didn't have any currently. It's almost like it pops up as and when it feels like it. The last two times has been on both shoulders, and prior to that he has had it a couple of times on the groin and hip area! It just vanishes after a week or so until the next time. I've always put it down to viral as he had a cold once when he had a bout of it. But the more it happens the more it concerns me. Lymph nodes weren't felt, checked or even mentioned by the GP, but I have checked where the more obvious ones are to check and they seem fine. But maybe I'll have to mention this Thursday and request he does have some bloods done.

Isn't it such a minefield when it comes to kids 🤯 makes me worry so much!!!
Thank you for taking the time to tell me your experience, its nice to know I'm not the only one dealing with this x

@Adeleex bless you, you’re doing the right thing by getting him checked. With regards to the urinary symptoms - my son would literally wee tiny drops! It would get to the stage where if we were going out, he would wee before we left, have 2 wees on a 10 minute car journey, and then wee when we got to the destination - all whilst having nothing to drink in the meantime! Have you checked out ERIC? It’s a really useful tool to help with wee/poo issues. My son’s consultant referred him to urology as my son was weeing ALL the time - he had an ultrasound of kidneys and bladder which was fine, but apparently urinary issues can be hereditary (DS was having bed wetting issues and cons said it was in part hereditary from DH who had same
issues as a child).
