Hi all. My 4 yr old has had glasses since he was 2. I feel like I never understand what his prescription means- it's hard to get a clear explanation when he's with me. I wondered if anyone could give me a clue in simple terms what it's means

Right eye +5.75
Left eye +6.25
RVA 0.225
LVA 0.05

Thank you

He’s v.v long sighted. DS has a similar prescription (+6.50)and has worn glasses since around 8 months old. Asda do free thinning btw. I know children get an extra amount in the glasses voucher towards thinning but even our local independent couldn’t do glasses as well/thin, or as cheaply, as Asda opticians. Especially when a fussy teen.
the + numbers are the prescription strength & then Right Visual Acuity Left Visual Acuity.

In laymans’s terms it’s called being long sighted. It’s moderate, rather than high.

the proper term is hyperopia or hypermetropia. Visually, it means when light rays go through the pupil, they focus further back in the eye than they should. Children and younger adults can focus more and bring their vision into sharper focus, but sometimes doing this makes one of their eyes turn inwards.

the numbers underneath show what his vision is like when wearing glasses. So the vision in his right eye, isn’t quite as good as the left (which is almost 20/20). Does he have patching? Often the eye with better vision is patched intermittently to force the vision in the worse eye to see better.

did that make sense?

Thank you both! I really appreciate the time you've taken to reply.

He doesn't have a patch at the moment but I think they're thinking of it if the weaker eye doesn't strengthen up. They want to do another test first to update his prescription and see if thay helps. How you've written that makes so much sense and I feel relieved to understand. So thank you very much.
