39° and vomiting

KingOfWishfulThinkin · 30/10/2022 03:19

My DD is almost 3, stayed with her Nanna Friday night as I was away with DP. She was fine when I left her but vomited twice around midnight and didn't sleep after that, didn't eat a thing and barely drank. I collected her as soon as I could (3 hour drive away) and bought her home. She did a huge nap, woke up feeling a little better and calpol bought temp down. She grazed on some fruit and toast and drank a small bottle of juice, temp down to 36.6° so assumed on the mend.

I stayed in bed with her and at 2:30 this morning she vomited again and her temp is now 39° and not coming down with calpol. No diarrhoea, hasn't done a poo since Thursday now (not abnormal, she has chronic constipation and takes cosmocol paediatric daily). What do we think this is and how do I handle it? First and only child, single parent with no voice of reason to assure me this is just one of those things that children get and she will be fine Halloween Blush

What @Cantseethewindows has posted above. Get her checked out and hope she feels better soon.

KingOfWishfulThinkin · 30/10/2022 15:42

We are in a&e waiting. Can't get her temp below 39.3°

I'm so pleased you're at A&E! Keep mentioning sepsis to anyone who'll listen! Hope you're seen soon and it's something innocent! Hugs

beckypv · 30/10/2022 18:20

I hope you get the help you need. Hopefully they will take bloods and that will help with a diagnosis and further treatment. When my son had a high temperature for 5 days he vomited a few times - I think it can be a natural response to an infection. Once in hospital the bloods indicated extremely high inflammation markers and that got the ball rolling with treatment. He ended up having an infection in his blood that then rooted in his tibia as osteomyelitis. I think temperatures can panic people but once it’s gone on for 4 or 5 days, seeking medical advice is entirely appropriate. Good luck

KingOfWishfulThinkin · 30/10/2022 20:31

We've just got back. Her temp hit 39.8° whilst there and it still took them 4 hours to get a doctor to see us. They've said upper respiratory infection, just to keep giving her paracetamol and ibuprofen and get her to drink and sent us on our way. I'm not thrilled - no blood tests, just general obs and ears & throat. That's it. We're home and she's in bed, I'm going to keep my eye on her tomorrow and see where we are at.

I’m glad you didn’t have to stay too long, but frustrating no real answers…. It is probably quite likely to be a watch and wait and hopefully she will improve, but it’s annoying not to just be able to solve it. When we first saw the gp on day 4 with my sons temperature she wasn’t concerned even though he had a measured temperature of 39.5 and a HR of 120. It was 36hrs later that we called 111 as there had been no improvement and leg pain had since become acute. That’s when we were sent to hospital. Hopefully your daughter will pick up in the next couple of days. I would write down the time of every temperature and medicine so that you can be objective with what progress or decline is happening.

Cantseethewindows · 30/10/2022 22:41

Glad you're back home! What did they say about the strange crying and the cold hands and feet/ the likelihood of sepsis? Do not hesitate to go back/ call an ambulance if you become worried overnight. Your instinct matters and the doctors should definitely listen. Good luck!

Joshanddonna · 30/10/2022 22:50

They get so ill it’s such a shock. When my dd had tonsillitis she was just like this. Just keep up the medicine and see if she will eat little things. Lollipops or ice pops are good. It’s so hard. Loads of peppa pig and cuddles. X

lovelychops · 30/10/2022 22:50

Glad you're home. Please be mindful to ignore the previous advice about stripping off / cold flannels/ tepid baths etc. Really bad advice.
Keep a little note of what times she is due calpol and bfuen. Set a reminder on your phone. Keep up the doses throughout the night.
Keep offering sips of liquids. Hopefully you'll see an improvement soon. Hope she's feeling better soon

KingOfWishfulThinkin · 31/10/2022 07:41

Thanks for all of your support and kind words everyone.

She slept well and drank quite a lot through the night but her temp is at 39.2° currently so going to give her calpol now then ibuprofen in 2 hours and work on that routine throughout the day.

The advice regarding flannels and stripping her I haven't taken, she's not a stranger to a good fever so I've been given great advice by doctors before - thanks for everyone's concern regarding the advice given though.

If she doesn't improve or I can't keep her fever down by lunch, I'll call her GP.

The weird cry, no one seemed to see any significance in and no one touched her hands and feet so I made a point of it. Her hands warmed up but her legs and feet were still cold which I mentioned but again, no one really seemed to pick up on.

I hope the fever has come down by now Flowers

KingOfWishfulThinkin · 01/11/2022 12:11

@PritiPatelsMaker unfortunately not and she's so fed up of medicine that she is completely refusing it now. I'm managing to sneak some into her drinks but I don't think she's getting full doses. She has a snotty nose, cough and yellow/green gunk in her eyes.

Spoke to the gp this morning who although friendly, brushed it off as a virus and told me to keep her fluids up. Mentioned the cold hands and feet and he said it's dehydration and poor circulation. If she's still off through the night/tomorrow I'll take her back to a&e. She's just not right, poor mite. Still hasn't really eaten either.

Parrotpretty · 01/11/2022 12:13

The GP should see her its not a&e's job. Can you call the surgery back and ask for a face to face appointment?

KingOfWishfulThinkin · 01/11/2022 12:43

@Parrotpretty unfortunately it doesn't appear to be anyone's 'job' at the moment. We're just being passed from pillar to post as she seems to get worse. I'm not one to rush to a&e unless necessary (if you read the start of my post you'll see how hesitant I was as I was unsure of the severity of the situation) so for me to say that's the next step shows I'm at the end of my tether and just want to know what's wrong with her and how to make her feel better.

OP posts:
beckypv · 01/11/2022 15:29

In a weird way, maybe it is reassuring that she is snotty etc as that is likely to be the cause of her temperatures rather than anything more sinister. Now that it has developed into cold like symptoms (albeit severe) I would be trying the gp again (or even a pharmacist) rather than going through the trauma and wait of a&e. Keeping up the fluids I guess is key at this point while she feels rubbish.

KingOfWishfulThinkin · 01/11/2022 15:35

@beckypv I think you're right. I'll see how she is tomorrow and call the gp back if necessary. She's gone awfully hot again this afternoon!

beckypv · 04/11/2022 07:11

@KingOfWishfulThinkin how is your little one doing now? I hope things have calmed down.

KingOfWishfulThinkin · 04/11/2022 09:45

@beckypv spent last night in a&e again, her blood oxygen levels dropped to 86 and her temp was touching 40°. They gave her some paracetamol suppositories which helped a lot and monitored her, she had some oxygen and we've been sent home to monitor and let her rest. They're sticking with upper respiratory infection that will pass on its own. Thank you for checking in!

Jules912 · 04/11/2022 11:52

Hope she's on the mend soon. My DS woke up with similar symptoms (minus the shaking) and GP sent straight to A&E where they rushed us through as soon as he mentioned a stiff neck. Typically the calpol kicked in and he perked up just as he was seen but doctor said upper respiratory tract infection, probably flu and that he's seen a lot of children with similar lately. Also advised rest and come back if it gets worse.

KingOfWishfulThinkin · 06/11/2022 01:34

Update for anyone still reading or struggling with similar symptoms - we've ended up being blue lighted to a&e this evening, after some tests and X-rays, she has pneumonia. I'm glad we came back or this wouldn't have been diagnosed. She's been prescribed amoxicillin and is currently on oxygen as her levels won't stay above 80 without it. My poor babe has had this for 9 days and this is the 4th time we've asked for medical assistance because she's not right. Trust your guts!

Wow that is an ordeal. Praying for her speedy recovery!

CharlotteFlax · 06/11/2022 01:59

I'm so sorry you've had to go through this rigmorale! Really hope this is the only time you have to do it.

Be strong, keep being your DD's best advocate and I hope you don't have to stay too long.

Jules912 · 06/11/2022 07:40

Wow, hope she's better soon!

PritiPatelsMaker · 06/11/2022 07:42

Your poor little DD. Hope the treatment turns her around really quickly Flowers

KingOfWishfulThinkin · 06/11/2022 08:57

Thanks everyone. She's got an oxygen tube in her nose and is going to be given antibiotics via an IV as she's not taking it orally. We've been told we're here indefinitely at the moment - not what I anticipated when I spoke to 111 last night! She's very very sad but luckily very sleepy so managing to keep her head down and rest.
