3 month old regression after hitting head?

sasscass · 20/10/2022 12:20

My 3 month old hit the back of her head when rolling over during tummy time 2 days ago. She cried a bit and I comforted her, handed her to her dad and she fell asleep in his arms.

I don’t know if it’s a coincidence, but the day after (and since then) she doesn’t hold her head up anymore when sitting on my lap. And I put her on my chest and carry her around, she usually supports her head and looks around at her environment but now her head just slumps forwards and she’s only got a bit of a head control. She has regressed and I don’t know why.

Is this normal? Or has something happened when she hit her head?

I presume you have taken her to be checked over? Nobody on munsnet can give you an answer.

Nursemumma92 · 20/10/2022 12:26

Any concerns and I would get her checked by a professional. It could be that it is hurting her to hold it up which is why she isn't, so not to panic but she needs to be seen if her behaviour/posture has changed. If she is alert and feeding ok then give her calpol but still get her checked.

sasscass · 20/10/2022 12:26

@Thesearmsofmine no. I haven’t. Because I was told that babies bump their heads and it’s nothing to worry about.

@Nursemumma92 i was thinking the same too. She’s feeding fine, still smiling like usual but it’s just her sudden lack of head control which is concerning me. Thank you

It may well be nothing to worry about but I would definitely get this checked, just to be on the safe side. Hope you're okay and that you get some answers soon Flowers

Get it checked out

sasscass · 20/10/2022 12:30

@octoberfarm thank you ❤️

I wonder if she's tweaked a muscle is she rolled awkwardly. I'd get her checked out.

PinkButtercups · 20/10/2022 12:39

You have to get her checked out. Especially if you've noticed a change.

sasscass · 20/10/2022 12:43

@Nursemumma92 @PinkButtercups @Thesearmsofmine @octoberfarm @washingbasketqueen I’d like to add that this happened on Tuesday, yesterday, on Wednesday, she had her vaccines. I noticed that she wasn’t holding herself very well yesterday but I put it down to her having the vaccines and feeling a bit under the weather or weak. Could this potentially be due to the vaccines or is hitting her head more likely the culprit?

It's hard to say - vaccines can hit them pretty hard (the 8 week ones especially for mine) but I haven't heard of it affecting head control before. I'd definitely speak to the doctor Flowers

Tdcp · 20/10/2022 12:46

The regression in head control is concerning, it's probably nothing sinister, like a tweaked muscle or something but you need to get her seen by a professional.

Nursemumma92 · 20/10/2022 12:49

Could be down to vaccines although I've not heard of it but I would at least call GP or health visitor (whoever is easiest to get hold of) and discuss whether they feel they should see her. Good to hear she is alert and smiling still 🥰

PinkyU · 20/10/2022 12:58

If you do a “pull to sit” does she bring her head up with her, even after a slight delay?

If you hold her prone (like you’re flying her above your head, holding her around her trunk) does she hold her legs and head to align her body?

If you pop her arm across her chest and neck so it touches her opposite ear does her arm just there or does she move it back?

These are things that might indicate hypotonia (lower than average muscle tone) in an infant.

If you’re noticing these things contact your GP for an urgent appointment or call 111 explaining a recent head knock.

sasscass · 20/10/2022 21:49

@Nursemumma92 just came to me, I held her after she bumped her head and she managed to hold herself up without wobbling at all. If it was due to the head bump, wouldn’t she be unable to hold her head immediately after it happened?

I tried tummy time again with her earlier and she can still lift her head and roll over.. it’s just when I sit her upright on my lap, or I hold her on my chest and walk around, her head seems more wobbly than usual and she can’t hold it for long periods like she could.

I called 111 and I have made a drs appointment and 111 told me to wait until the appointment

It's difficult to say whether she would or wouldn't have been able to after the head bump but it sounds like it's more of a positional thing in terms of her struggling to hold it up in certain positions rather than others so it could be that a certain area is sore and discouraging her from doing it. Definitely a good idea to get the GP to check her out, just to make sure there is nothing untoward. So hard when they are so tiny and helpless and can't verbalise anything! Hope your appointment goes well x
