Stopping antibiotics before end of course with 3 year old

Toddler started antibiotics on Monday had one dose before bed
Supposed to be 4 doses a day
Managed to get nearly 3 into him yesterday but no amount of trickery, bribery works since he tasted how gross they are and I'm having to pin him down and syringe into his cheeks while he screams, cries, tries to get away and spits it out/gags on it
Really is horrible..

He had been ill for 4 days and yesterday morning seems to of just been fine since, only since 1 dose of antibiotics so I don't think it's related I think he has just turned a corner. Because I'd started the antibiotics I carried on but its such a battle, he's spitting it out and not getting a full dose anyway, its too hard to completely pin him down and get it all in on my own. Has he had so much that if I stop now it's adding to the whole problem with antibiotic resistance? I always finish a course but I've got another 6 days of this, 4 times a day for a child who isn't ill anymore

Do not stop the course of antibiotics early. Any surviving bacteria will be resistant to that antibiotic, they will multiply and cause re infection and you won't be able to use that antibiotic to treat it. You need to get the meds in him somehow. In a yoghurt and give him a chocolate afterwards?

I of course know that but I mean after 3 doses that weren't even full doses due to how much he spat out?

To be honest just carry on till the end of dosing. I don't like the over prescribing of antibiotics which is often about placating people that the doctors are listening or doing something but not finishing a course is even worse.

He's got two full days in nursery the next 2 days and there's no chance they'll manage it they won't be willing to pin him down by his arms and legs either so not sure how that'll work unless I take 2 days off with a child who isn't even ill anymore Sad I'm worried about continuing and it tailing off/failing more than I am about admitting defeat now. He's fine with amoxicillin he's had that once before but this toxic sour stuff is hell! What child would willingly take it! Arggggh

Which antibiotic is it?

Potato28 · 19/10/2022 10:35

What is it for?
Ring the doctor and ask for a different type

Shepq · 19/10/2022 10:38

Ring the doctors for advice. Don't just stop it.

DoodlePug · 19/10/2022 10:39

Normally you must carry on, it's so important.

In this case he's probably not even getting the dose intended. Can you speak to gp, see what they say? Presumably he needs it, must be another formulation or an alternative.

For future buy some large syringes (from vet) and get him used to having the occasional one with something nice in it, yoghurt, choc milk, etc.

Toddler can be awkward buggers. You never know, he might actually be an angel for the nursery staff.

maryberryslayers · 19/10/2022 10:41

Buy thick chocolate mouse/pudding. Mix it in that, he'll eat it no problem.

GlassDeli · 19/10/2022 10:46

Or how about some ice cream topped with chocolate and medicine sauce?

Hugasauras · 19/10/2022 10:47

I bet he takes it far better for the nursery staff than at home! That's always the way ...

Urgh Pen-v is the most disgusting antibiotic out there. Truly vile bitter taste. I say this as a paediatric a&e nurse (yes I’ve tried it). Speak to the GP for advice if it’s for a tonsillitis they might want to change it or Change the management as the clinical picture has changed

Titsflyingsouth · 19/10/2022 15:01

Is it that bitter red/orange stuff - that is especially vile.

Keep with the dosing. Even if only a small amount goes in - the trick with antibiotics is regularly spaced doses.

But contact the doctor and ask for advice - maybe they can offer you something else.
