Periorbital cellulitis - help calm me down

YukoandHiro · 17/10/2022 19:59

I struggle with health anxiety around my children so please be kind in your replies.
My daughter had a mildly red eyelid yesterday, woke up with it slightly swollen (but not badly) this morning and also had a fever of 38. I took her to the GP. A trainee GP reviewed her but called in a senior for a second opinion. The v competent seeming senior ruled out severe illness despite the fever and prescribed oral antibiotics (co-amoxiclav) for 7 days with instructions to go to a&e if anything deteriorated eg eye got worse or she became lethargic etc (despite temp she's been active and playing/eating a bit etc).
They couldn't decide if the fever was a random unrelated viral thing or a case of periorbital cellulitis. They also said to go back in 2 days if nothing got worse but she didn't get better either.
I've now read up about it online - I know, I know! - and it seems most children with fever are admitted to hospital for an IV. She's had two doses of antibiotics now and is happy in herself etc but no change either to low grade fever or eye.
I guess what I'm asking is would you go to hospital if the fever was still there tomorrow? Or wait it out the 48 hours? My mind is just spinning really.

Hard to say without seeing obviously.
If it is a small amount of redness (like a stye) and a fever, I would personally watch and wait with abx.
If it is significant or worsening redness (like the images on google for periorbital cellulitis) I would go to a&e.

The redness and swelling is definitely mild. She can fully open her eye and uses it normally (both docs checked for that).
In fact I wouldn't have been the least bit concerned if it was just the eye only and no fever - I wouldn't have even taken her in for that. So in a way it's good it happened.
Hopefully both eye and fever will be a little improved in the morning.

This might help put your mind at ease. Oral antibiotics are the first line treatment for periorbital cellulitis unless severe.

My dd used to get this a lot. And was admitted to hospital for iv antibiotics. But her eye was shut and it looked so swollen and red.
It was scary at the time.

Since then we just use an antibiotic eye cream when it looks like flaring up again. A locum GP said to moisturise her eyelids as eczema round there can cause it. Since then it hasnt happened again. Prior to that it was every year fir about 4 years.

Your dd sounds like ages well in herself. How high is her temp?

I had a pretty bad case of periorbital cellulitis, my entire eyelid (upper and lower) were extremely red and swollen but I didn’t feel unwell in myself. I was prescribed oral antibiotics with instructions to go to A&E if it got worse or failed to get better within 24 hours, but thankfully it did. Personally I would seek medical opinion if there isn’t a hint of improvement (or if things get worse) by the morning.

My DD had this - I'd never heard of it before! Our GP sent us to A&E who prescribed antibiotics and we had to go back 48 hours later. Had it not cleared up they would've admitted her for IV antibiotics, but thankfully it was much better within 48 hours so they were happy just to continue with oral antibiotics

YukoandHiro · 17/10/2022 22:21

Thanks everyone. Good to hear that others got oral antibiotics too.
I'll keep a close eye on her and take her in tomorrow if things aren't getting better.

Her eye looks much better this morning although she still has a raised temp. Going to keep monitoring her all day

That’s good the antibiotics are working
