Hi everyone just after some reassurance as me & my son are dealing with his first chest infection that he's on antibiotics for 😩 he's 2.
Hes just had his 5th dose (started Friday night and he has 3 doses a day).

I have some questions for anyone who has experience with chest infections please

Today he's got the runs a bit, is that normal?
He also keeps spiking a temperature still, I'm not sure when the antibiotics are meant to break the fever?
The fever seems to come up more at night too. I've been alternating calpol and nuerofen (as advised by doctor) but last night his temp went up to 38.5 only 2 hours after calpol, so I gave him nuerofen and it took a good few hours to come back down.
I know fevers are a good thing but I'm terrified of febrile seizures 😭
He's quite run down still although still playing, tired because of the sleepless nights, and not really eating much, drinking but only when he wants to.
Is all of this normal? When should I take him back to the doctors if I see no improvement? It's the spiking fevers worrying me the most 😔
His breathing is fine, obviously a bit faster than normal but nothing alarming, and he is coughing quite frequently and has been sick a few times because of it.

Thank you 💗

Hi,

My youngest has had a fair few chest infections and everytime she has antibiotics she has the runs, the Dr has said a few times that, that is fairly common, she always gets bad nappy rash from it too. In terms of fevers still occuring sometimes it's taken about 5 days for my daughter's temperature to return to normal however I think it varies child to child so if you are concerned call the doctors, you know your child and if you are worried it's always best to speak to the Dr for a second opinion.

I hope he gets better soon x

Thank you!
Could I ask how long is usually takes your daughter to get better after a chest infection?
My son seems better today, however still very tired, not really eating and only drinking little and often. He also had horrid coughing fits last night 😩
Just wondering when to expect my boy to be his happy little self again? (obviously I know it's not instant, just wondering about a time frame)

Try giving the antibiotic straight after food to counteract the side effects on his tummy.

A temperature of 38.5 is a fever but isn't really really high. In fact new thinking is that we shouldn't give medicine for a temperature lower than 38.5 because our body can cope with a temp of 38 and our body is more effectively fighting the infection at that temperature than if we keep lowering it using paracetamol/ibuprofen.

Keeping moving is useful for helping chest infections shift. I'd get out for fresh air and a little walk.

I was not a well child and had bad asthma and umpteen chest infections a year. I learned not to lie flat as my chest felt heavy and breathing more obstructed the flatter I was.

As long as he's eating something and drinking enough to still be weeing then I wouldn't worry too much about that.

But as with any illness in young children if you become concerned and definitely if you think he starts seeming worse then go back to the GP.

Normally it's about a week for her to be better in herself and then about 2/3 weeks the cough to go, she tends to have an almost constant cough (it's being investigated) so it can be hard to tell. Glad he is better today but if you are worried, I would definitely call the Dr, it may just be really reassuring to hear their professional advice. It is so horrible when they're Ill and it brings so much worry!! Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for your son soon! Xx
